Kingham Shines, But Spikes Fall to IronBirds' Extra-Inning Surge

State College Spikes News Release

STATE COLLEGE, PA - Nick Kingham allowed only one run over a career-long six innings on the mound for the State College Spikes, but the Aberdeen IronBirds' four-run surge in the tenth inning gave them a 5-1 decision on Wednesday night at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.

Kingham sparkled on the mound, retiring eight batters in a row after allowing his only run on Mychal Givens's triple to right field in the first inning. The Pirates' 2010 fourth-round pick also recorded eight straight outs to end his evening, and saw his ERA plummet to 2.65, which would rank him seventh in the New York-Penn League entering tonight. It was also the seventh straight start in which Kingham has allowed one run or less.

Wes Freeman tied the game for State College (21-32) in the fourth inning with a triple to the gap in right-center field that brought in Ashley Ponce , and the score stayed deadlocked for the remainder of the regulation nine innings.

Matt Skirving made two plays that helped ensured the score stayed 1-1 as well, picking Givens off of second base in the fourth inning, then throwing out Aberdeen's (19-33) Kyle Hoppy when he tried to take a base on a wild pitch in the eighth inning. The protracted argument after Hoppy was retired also resulted in the ejection of IronBirds manager Leo Gomez.

Aberdeen was able to plate four runs on four hits, an error, a hit batsman, and a bases-loaded walk in the first extra frame, however, to take the victory.

Taylor Lewis and Kirk Singer each produced multi-hit games for the Spikes, who fell for just the third time in their last 12 games.

Jesus Brito (0-1) took the loss for State College after allowing all four IronBirds runs in the tenth and yielding a total of five hits, one walk and one hit batsman.

Enrico Jimenez (1-0) pitched a perfect ninth inning in relief to get the win for Aberdeen. IronBirds starter Tyler Wilson was also superb, though, allowing a run on three hits and a walk while striking out three in a no-decision.

The IronBirds attempted a total of eight bunts for either a hit or a sacrifice in the game, and notched two hits and two sacrifices out of them.

Thursday, the Spikes complete a three-game series against the IronBirds with a 7:05 p.m. matchup at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. State College will have right-hander Trent Stevenson (0-1) on the mound. Stevenson allowed just two runs on five hits over five innings in a loss to Jamestown last time out. Aberdeen will have left-hander Trent Howard, who was named to the 2011 New York-Penn League All-Star Game, on the mound.
