Tigers and Jammers Split Doubleheader
August 10, 2011 - New York-Penn League (NYPL)
Norwich Sea Unicorns News Release
NORWICH, CT - The Connecticut Tigers took the opening game of the doubleheader against the Jamestown Jammers 6-0 behind a dominant pitching performance from Wilsen Palacios, but saw a 4-0 lead evaporate in game two and fell 8-4 to split the two games at Dodd Stadium on Wednesday night.
Game one Tigers starter Wilsen Palacios tossed a complete game shutout gem for Connecticut to earn his third win of the year. The Jammers were able to muster just three base runners off the right-hander, including only two hits and one walk. The shutout for Palacios was the first in the New York-Penn League this season.
The Tigers jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning. After a Chad Wright leadoff walk, Tyler Collins followed with an RBI double and Dean Green came through with an RBI double of his own. Javier Azcona finished off the first inning scoring barrage with a two-run double.
Connecticut added a run in the second on an Aaron Westlake RBI double and a run in the third on a solo home run from Azcona, his third long ball of the season, to put the Tigers up 6-0.
In game two the Tigers once again got out to an early lead. In the first inning Connecticut got back-to-back doubles from Wright and Collins, with the latter an RBI two-bagger.
The Tigers would tack on a run in the third on a Green RBI single and two more in the fifth to jump out to a 4-0 lead.
Pedro Perez, making his first start of the year for Connecticut, threw four shutout innings, giving up just two hits and striking out three. He gave way to Melvin Mercedes and then Jeff Barfield, who both struggled through the sixth inning.
The Jammers came back to score four runs in the sixth and tie the game, fueled by two Tigers errors.
After throwing errors from Azcona and Eugenio Suarez helped score the first two runs of the inning, Eddie Rodriguez smacked an RBI double and Kentrell Dewitt tied the game with an RBI single.
In the eighth inning, which was extra innings because of the seven-inning doubleheader games, Josh Adams drew a leadoff walk off Rayni Guichardo. Jobduan Morales then broke the 4-4 tie when he crushed a triple to left field, scoring Adams and putting Jamestown on top 5-4. They would add three more runs in the frame to go up 8-4.
The Tigers and Jammers will play the finale and the rubber match of the three-game series tomorrow night.
First pitch is set for 7:05 PM.
