Iowa Cubs News Release
Micah Hoffpauir went 4-for-4 and was a triple shy of the cycle to lead Iowa to their fifth straight victory, a 9-6 win over the Portland Beavers Sunday afternoon.
The Beavers got on the board in the second inning when Wily Mo Pena reached on an error before Aaron Cunningham homered for the 2-0 lead. The Cubs answered right back in their half of the inning when Micah Hoffpauir doubled, his 30th of the season, to start the inning. Jim Adduci plated Hoffpauir with a sacrifice fly to trim the lead, 2-1. Bobby Scales, who reached on a fielder's choice then scored on Chris Robinsons's RBI groundout before Matt Camp launched a solo homer for the 3-2 advantage.
In the fourth inning Portland tied the game 3-3 when Josh Barfield hit an inside-the-park home run down the left field line. It was the second inside-the-park home run in the past week at Principal Park. Marquez Smith hit one for Iowa on Friday.
Hoffpauir started Iowa's fourth inning with his 20th home run of the season, giving Iowa the lead. In the fifth inning Hoffpauir drove in Barney with a single, giving the Cubs a 5-3 advantage.
The back-and-forth game wouldn't end there as the Beavers scored three runs in the seventh. Jeff Gray came in to relieve starter J.R. Mathes. He was greeted with back-to-back doubles from Nick Green and Cedric Hunter. The duo came around to score, and Pena knocked in another run, putting the Beavers ahead 6-5.
However, the 91 degree heat didn't seem to bother the Cubs. Fuld led off the seventh inning with a walk and then stole second, his 18th steal of the season. Hoffpauir doubled, his second of the game, plating Fuld and tying the game 6-6. Scales hit a sacrifice fly for the go-ahead run before Robinson doubled, driving in Hoffpauir and Scales for the 9-6 final. Robinson and Hoffpauir tallied three RBI Sunday.
Gray picked up his first win, but was also charged with a blown save. He allowed three runs on five hits through two innings. David Cales threw a scoreless ninth inning for the save.
Portland's Greg Burke took the loss, allowing two runs in 0.1 innings.
The Cubs and Beavers play game two of this series Monday at 7:05 p.m.
