Round Rock Express News Release
ROUND ROCK, Texas - Drew Locke's three-run homer capped a four-run first inning, and the Round Rock Express never trailed again en route to an 11-7 victory over the Sacramento River Cats in Sunday night's series opener at The Dell Diamond. The Express (48-68) have won four of their last five games overall and eight of 12 at home. The River Cats (62-54) entered the game with the Pacific Coast League's second-best road record (34-26).
Eric Sogard and Travis Buck opened the game with a double and a single, respectively, for Sacramento. Chris Carter then grounded out to third base, scoring Sogard. However, that was the only lead the River Cats would enjoy all night. The Express scored four runs on two hits in the bottom of the first and built a 7-1 lead through five innings. Express starter Yorman Bazardo did not allow another hit until Jared Price's two-out single in the fifth.
J.B. Shuck led off the bottom of the first with a walk, stole second, moved to third on Wladimir Sutil's sacrifice bunt and scored on a wild pitch. Chris Shelton walked and Matt Kata singled ahead of Locke's one-out homer, his team-leading 13th round-tripper of the season.
In the third, Kata delivered a one-out RBI single, and Locke followed with a sacrifice fly. Sutil plated a run in the fourth with a two-out single, scoring Brian Esposito.
Bazardo (3-4) made his third start in succession after starting the year with 26 relief appearances. He allowed four runs on seven hits and two walks with a season-high seven strikeouts over 6.1 innings. Dallas McPherson blasted a two-out, two-run homer in the sixth, and Jeff Baisley led off the seventh with a homer. Bazardo then struck out Price before giving way to the bullpen. Fernando Abad and Jonah Bayliss closed out the game for the Express.
Round Rock answered Sacramento's two-run sixth with a three spot. Collin DeLome homered on the first pitch of the inning, tying Locke for the team lead with his 13th homer of the season. Chris Shelton capped the frame with a two-out, two-run double. J.B. Shuck capped the scoring for the Express with a one-out RBI single in the seventh.
Sacramento scratched for three runs in the ninth, all coming on Jeff Larish's two-out homer.
John Halama (4-2) took the loss for the River Cats. He allowed seven runs on seven hits and three walks with two strikeouts over 5.0 innings. Graham Godfey worked the final 3.0 innings and surrendered four runs on eight hits and two walks with one strikeout.
Every Express starter hit safely save Brian Bogusevic, who walked, was hit by a pitch and scored twice. Kata was 3-for-3 with two walks. DeLome, Locke, Shuck, Sutil and Oswald Navarro all had two-hit nights. Locke had four RBI, his team-leading 16th multiple-RBI outing. Each starter scored at least one run.
Buck, McPherson and Sogard all had two-hit games for the River Cats. Sogard and Corey Wimberly each scored twice.
Round Rock and Sacramento continue their four-game series Monday with a 7:05 p.m. CDT first pitch at The Dell Diamond. Lefty Polin Trinidad (3-8, 4.78 ERA) is scheduled to start for the Express, while right-hander Travis Banwart (2-2, 5.72 ERA) gets the nod for the River Cats.
