Colorado Springs Sky Sox News Release

The Oklahoma City RedHawks downed the Colorado Springs Sky Sox by the score of 5-2 on Sunday evening at Security Service Field in a rain-shortened, six inning contest. At the start of the seventh inning, the umpires called for the tarp and after an hour and forty minute rain delay the game was called in favor of the RedHawks. The game was dominated by home runs as all seven runs scored in the game came off the long ball.

Oklahoma City got on the board right away in the first inning as the second batter of the game, third baseman Esteban German, sent the first pitch he saw off starter Alan Johnson over the right field wall to make it 1-0 RedHawks. Jump ahead to the fourth inning and the RedHawks hit a pair of two-run homers by Brandon Boggs and Kevin Richardson to make the score 5-0. All three homers came off Johnson who ended up being credited with a complete game.

The home run barrage would continue but this time for the Sky Sox. In the fifth, Michael McKenry led off the inning with a solo blast to right-center, his ninth of the season and fourth of the home stand. An inning later, Brad Eldred led off the frame with a monster blast to deep left off starter Michael Kirkman to cut the lead to 5-2. The bomb was his 27th of the season and moved him into a tie for second in the league.

That's as close as the Sky Sox would be allowed to get however as Mother Nature had her say in the game. Kirkman (12-3) picked up the win after tossing 5.2 innings and giving up two runs on six hits while walking four and striking out eight. Johnson (10-7) took the loss after surrendering five runs on ten hits. Zach Phillips notched his first save of the season by getting the final out of the sixth while escaping a bases-loaded jam.

Game two of the four game series is set for 7:05 PM (MDT) tomorrow night with the Sky Sox sending LH Josh Muecke (4-6, 5.85) to the mound to face RH Omar Beltre (2-8, 2.67).
