March 3, 2006 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Iowa Chops News Release
PEORIA, IL - The Iowa Stars and Peoria Rivermen met for the eighth time this season on Friday night in Illinois. Behind a spectacular 35 save performance by goaltender Mike Smith, the Iowa Stars posted a 6-1 victory.
Iowa Assistant Captain Toby Petersen started the scoring off for the Stars when he took a long outlet pass from Smith and then fired a low wrist-shot past Peoria goalie, Reinhard Divis at 6:47. Smith earned the lone assist. Peoria's Mike Mottau evened the score at one five minutes later.
Right Wing David Oliver gave Iowa the 2-1 lead at 3:43 of the second period. Mathias Tjarnqvist and Smith recorded the assists on the lone second period goal.
After a delay of game penalty against Iowa, Smith stopped a flurry of about eight Peoria shots to maintain the 2-1 lead. Immediately following the impressive 5-on-3 penalty-kill, Yared Hagos gave Iowa a 3-1 lead. Loui Eriksson potted his team-leading 19th of the season and second point of the night. Vojtech Polak continued the offensive explosion at 16:11, giving Iowa a 5-1 lead. Goalie Mike Smith earned his THIRD assist of the game on that goal. Oliver capped off the scoring, scoring his second of the game, with both Tjarnqvist and Brian Fahey registering their second assists of the game.
The offensive and defensive story of the game was Stars goaltender Mike Smith. Not only did the Kingston, Ontario native make 35 saves, he also tied an AHL record with three assists in a single game by a goaltender. He joins three other AHL goalies, most recently Martin Brodeur of the NHL's New Jersey Devils. Brodeur, then of the Utica Devils (AHL), accomplished the feat on January 23rd, 1993 at Adirondack Red Wings (AHL).
