Iowa Mounts Furious Rally in 12-10 Win

COLORADO SPRINGS (Aug. 3, 2015) - The Iowa Cubs (59-50) scored six runs in the eighth and four more runs in the ninth to cap a furious rally to beat the Colorado Springs Sky Sox (43-64) 12-10 in Pacific Coast League action Monday night at Security Service Field. The win was Iowa's fifth in a row, and gives the I-Cubs a series victory.

Trailing 7-2, Iowa exploded for six runs in the top of the eighth inning, highlighted by a three-RBI triple from John Andreoli to take an 8-7 lead.

Iowa lost the lead in the bottom of the eighth when the Sky Sox tagged lefty reliever Joe Ortiz (3-1) for three runs on four hits.

However, Iowa rallied again in the top of the ninth, scoring four more runs, capped by a bases-clearing double from Baez to take the lead for good. Sky Sox righty Rob Wooten (4-3) began the inning on the mound, but allowed a run and left with two runners aboard. Colorado Springs then turned to lefty Jeremy Horst, who walked Adron Chambers to load the bases before allowing Baez's big double.

Iowa starter Felipe Paulino didn't factor into the decision after allowing three earned runs on seven hits and two walks with four strikeouts over 6.0 innings.

Rehabber Zac Rosscup struggled in the seventh inning, allowing three runs on four hits with a strikeout while only retiring two.

Righty Carl Edwards Jr. came on after the late rally to close the door in the ninth. Edwards walked one and struck out one to earn his second save of the season with Iowa.

Colorado Springs wasted a solid start from righty Hiram Burgos, who pitched 6.0 innings and allowed two runs, one earned, on five hits and three walks with nine strikeouts.

Iowa churned out 12 hits, including six for extra bases. Baez led the way with three hits, three RBI and a run scored. Andreoli drove in three and scored a run. Arismendy Alcantara went 2-for-4 with a double and scored twice. Luke Carlin walked twice and scored twice.

Rogers paced the Sky Sox with a four-hit night, drove in three and scored three times. Luis Sardinas and Clark each recorded two hits and scored twice. Domingo Santana drove in two.

The I-Cubs and Sky Sox will play game three of a four-game set on Tuesday, with first pitch set for 7:35 p.m. CT. Right-hander Carlos Pimentel (7-5, 3.28) will start for Iowa opposite Sky Sox righty Ariel Pena (1-1, 5.37). The game can be heard live on AM 940, 104.5 FM, and live-streamed at Iowacubs.com.
