ST. PAUL, MN - The Iowa Cubs (34-26) evened the series with their second straight win against the St. Paul Saints (35-26) by a score of 9-3, Saturday at CHS Field.
St. Paul got on the board first with a solo home run off the bat of Andrew Bechtold in the second inning. Joey Gallo followed with a solo shot of his own in the third frame, extending the Saints' lead to 2-0.
They kept their 2-0 lead through four innings, as Kenta Maeda didn't allow a run in his four innings. Maeda surrendered just three hits while striking out five in his third start on major league rehab.
As soon as Maeda left the game, Iowa jumped ahead, scoring five runs in the fifth inning. They got an RBI double from Dom Nuñez, two bases loaded walks and a two-run single by Chase Strumpf for their five runs.
Iowa wasn't done, scoring three more runs in the sixth on an error, hit batter and sacrifice fly to take an 8-2 lead. St. Paul got a run back in their half of the sixth inning on an RBI single from Tony Wolters, making it 8-3.
Iowa added a run in the eighth on a sacrifice fly, while Ryan Jensen and Jordan Holloway combined to retire the final eight outs without allowing a run. The two struck out six batters, earning the I-Cubs their second consecutive victory.
