Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release
KANNAPOLIS, N.C. (April 21, 2015) - Chris Curley drove in both Kannapolis runs, and the Intimidators secured the game's final out with a play at the plate to prevent the would-be tying run in a 2-1 win (F/7) over the West Virginia Power on Tuesday in Game 2 of a doubleheader at CMC-NorthEast Stadium. Kannapolis split the doubleheader with West Virginia, which took the earlier game, 5-3 (F/7).
With the Power down to their last out and a Taylor Gushue representing the tying run on first base, Trace Tam Sing blasted a ball to the gap in right-center field. With Gushue rounding third, center fielder James Baldwin relayed a throw to second baseman Ethan Gross, who fired it home to catcher Zach Fish. Fish applied the tag, and home plate ump Chris Scott signaled the final out.
Curley drove in Eddy Alvarez in the first inning with a two-out base hit for an early 1-0 lead. After the Power evened the score, 1-1, on Chase Simpson's RBI-single to plate Tito Polo in the top of the fourth, Curley and the Intimidators responded in the home half of the inning. Christian Stringer was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning, and he moved to second base on a passed ball. Curley followed with a double down the left-field line, scoring Stringer for a 2-1 advantage.
Jacob Morris (1-1) recorded his first professional win. The converted outfielder tossed a scoreless fifth inning, working around one hit while striking out one. Peter Tago tossed 2.0 scoreless frames to close out the game for the save (1). Kannapolis starter Yency Almonte worked 4.0 innings, allowing a run on four hits with three strikeouts.
West Virginia's Jake Burnette (0-2) took the loss, allowing the go-ahead run in the fourth inning.
The Intimidators wrap up this 7-game home stand on Wednesday morning at 10:05 a.m. with an Education Day game presented by CMC-NorthEast. Reigning South Atlantic League Pitcher of the Week LHP Jordan Guerrero (1-0, 0.00) will start for Kannapolis against West Virginia's RHP Alex McRae (1-0, 1.80).
