Hagerstown Suns News Release

HAGERSTOWN, MD - The Delmarva Shorebirds (6-6) used a four-run seventh inning on Tuesday to dispatch the Hagerstown Suns (6-6) by a final of 6-3. The Delmarva win evened the three-game series at one game apiece.

The Suns led 3-2 heading into the seventh, but could not tame the Delmarva bats any longer. The top of the seventh began with a leadoff single from 2B Guillermo Salas. Two batters later, 1B Cameron Kneeland drew a walk to put runners at first and second with one out. Catcher Alex Murphy, the league leader in RBI coming into the game, drove both runners home with a double down the left field line to put the Shorbirds on top for good 4-3. Two batters later, 3B Jomar Reyes added two insurance runs with a blast over the center field wall for his first homerun of the season.

Delmarva had held a 1-0 lead as well after half an inning of play. In the top half of the first Kneeland hit a one-out double to right. He moved to third on a groundout to short, and scored when RF Conor Bierfeldt hit a fly ball single to right.

The Suns responded right away with two runs of their own in the bottom half of the first. With runners on the corners and two outs, catcher Raudy Read delivered an RBI single to right to knot the game at 1-1. The next batter, LF Jeff Gardner, was issued a walk to load the bases. Then, LHP Brian Gonzalez threw a wild pitch, which allowed CF Dale Carey to trot home from third and make it 2-1 Hagerstown.

The Suns added to their lead in the fourth thanks to a sacrifice fly by DH Grant DeBruin. However, that run was negated the next half inning when Murphy hit an RBI single to right. That made it again a one-run ballgame and set the stage for Delmarva's comeback in the seventh.

All four seventh-inning runs for the Shorebirds were charged to LHP Brett Mooneyham (0-1). Mooneyham was making his season debut for Hagerstown after being activated from the DL just a couple days ago. Mooneyham wound up tossing two innings, surrendering the four earned runs on three hits and two walks while striking out two. RHP Garrett Cortright (1-0) picked up the win for the Shorebirds. He threw one scoreless and hitless inning in relief. LHP Donnie Hart entered the game with two on and two out in the ninth, and recorded the final out for his third save of the season.

These teams will conclude their three-game series at Municipal Stadium on Wednesday April 22. The Suns will send RHP Luis Reyes (0-1) to the mound for his third start of the season. He will square off against RHP Matthew Grimes (0-0) for Delmarva. First pitch is scheduled for 10:35am.
