KANNAPOLIS, N.C. (April 21, 2015) - The Kannapolis Intimidators out-hit West Virginia but gave up four runs over the final three innings, falling to the Power, 5-3 (F/7), on Tuesday in Game 1 of a doubleheader. The Intimidators (4-7) collected 10 hits, including a team-best 3-hit game for Christian Stringer, but the Power came away with the win.
West Virginia struck early with a run in the top of the first when Jordan Luplow drew a walk, stole second, and scored on a Taylor Gushue base hit for a 1-0 lead.
Kannapolis took the lead, scoring two in the second and another in the third, for a 3-1 advantage. Toby Thomas put the Intimidators ahead on a two-run single, driving in Brett Austin and Louie Lechich. Michael Suiter extended the lead by leading off the bottom of the third with a solo home run (1).
The Power reclaimed the lead with a 3-run top of the fifth, highlighted by a Luplow 2-run triple that tied the game. Luplow then scored on a passed ball for a 4-3 lead.
Kannapolis starter Luis Martinez (0-1) worked 4 and 2/3 innings, allowing four runs (three earned) on six hits while striking out four and walking two while taking the loss.
Power starter John Sever lasted 4.0 innings, giving up three runs on five hits. Junior Lopez (2-0) took over in the fifth and kept Kannapolis quiet offensively with a pair of scoreless innings to earn the win. Sam Street tossed a scoreless seventh for the save (1).
The Intimidators continue this 3-game series against the Power in Game 2 of today's doubleheader as RHP Yency Almonte (0-0, 3.86) faces West Virginia's RHP Jose Regalad (0-0, 0.00). First pitch of Game 2 will be at 8:00 p.m.
The Intimidators wrap up this 7-game home stand on Wednesday morning at 10:05 a.m. with an Education Day game presented by CMC-NorthEast. Reigning South Atlantic League Pitcher of the Week LHP Jordan Guerrero (1-0, 0.00) will start for Kannapolis against West Virginia's RHP Alex McRae (1-0, 1.80).
