Augusta GreenJackets News Release

AUGUSTA, GA: A strong home debut by starting pitcher Sam Coonrod was washed away by a top of the ninth inning collapse by the Augusta GreenJackets (4-6). The Charleston RiverDogs (7-4) put up three runs in the top of the ninth to secure a five to four comeback win on Monday night at Lake Olmstead Stadium.

Coonrod pitched five strong innings with only allowing three hits, two earned runs and six strikeouts. Connor Kaden came into the game at the start of the sixth inning and worked two innings of relief giving up one hit, no runs and one strikeout. GreenJackets pitcher Reyes Moronta will take the loss and blown save on the night by allowing three runs in the top of the ninth inning.

Abiatal Avelino started the game off very quickly with a lead off single to left field for the Charleston RiverDogs during the top of the first inning. Avelino went on to steal both second and third bases to put the RiverDogs in scoring position. A RBI ground out to the GreenJackets shortstop Jeremy Sy by Jorge Mateo allowed Avelino to cross home plate for the first run of the game.

The GreenJackets finally received a little bit of momentum in the game with pair of singles from Skyler Ewing and John Riley during the bottom of the second inning. John Riley's base hit was able to knock in Aramis Garcia (who reached first base on a walk) for the first run of evening for the GreenJackets. Andrew Cain joined in on the GreenJackets hit parade in the second with a two out RBI single to score Skyler Ewing. Giving the GreenJackets a two to one lead at the end of the second.

The RiverDogs broke a four straight scoreless innings in the top of the fifth inning to tie the ball game at two a piece. When Jose Javier hit a sacrifice fly to score Austin Aune who led of the top of fifth inning with a triple. The GreenJackets responded to the RiverDogs score in the fifth inning by scoring in the bottom of the sixth and seventh innings with putting up one run in each. Second round draft pick Aramis Garcia knocked in Jeremy Sy with a RBI double in the sixth inning. Excellent two out base running by Randy Ortiz and Johneshwy Fargas caused the RiverDogs to make a mental mistake on where to throw the ball too, helped tack on the insurance run in the seventh inning.

The GreenJackets took at four to two lead heading into the top of the ninth inning. Nestor Rojas (GreenJackets Manager) went to his bullpen for right-handed pitcher Reyes Moronta who has appeared in three games this year with one save in one save opportunity. After three singles by RiverDog hitters and a run scored to make the score three to four. There was a questionable call by field umpire Ried Joyner, which resulted in manager Rojas arguing the call until being ejected form the game. The umpire's decision left the bases loaded and only one out. RiverDogs left fielder Brandon Thomas singled to right field scoring both Eduardo de Oleo and Austin Aune for the tying and go-ahead runs. GreenJackets pitcher Moronta allowed three hits and three earned runs that ended up giving the RiverDogs the lead and ultimately the ball game at the end of the night.

Tomorrow night the GreenJackets and RiverDogs are back in action starting at 7:05pm. The probable pitching match up features left hander Nick Gonzalez for the GreenJackets and left hander Justin Kamplai for the RiverDogs. Tuesday night's promotional night is BOGO BEVS presented by SweetWater Brewing Company. Fans can enjoy two-for-one pricing on soft drinks and draft beers throughout the game. As always, on a Tuesday home game the GreenJackets will have post-game Launch-A-Ball.
