Savannah Sand Gnats News Release
Savannah, GA - The Rome Braves won a pitching duel 2-1 over the Savannah Sand Gnats Tuesday night at Historic Grayson Stadium. The teams have now split the first two games of the three-game series, with the rubber game scheduled for Wednesday evening.
The Braves (4-6) took a one-run lead by scoring two runs in the top of the fourth inning when the first three men to bat all recorded hits. SS Ozhaino Albies led off with a triple and scored on CF Keith Curcio's down the right field line. 3B Jordan Edgerton singled up the middle to score Curcio and give the Braves a 2-1 lead.
Savannah starter RHP Scarlyn Reyes was sharp outside of the fourth inning. He faced the minimum nine batters in the first three innings and the minimum six batters in the fifth and sixth combined. All told, he struck out seven and walked one but took the loss to fall to 0-2 on the season.
The Sand Gnats turned to relievers RHP James Duff and LHP Shane Bay, who tossed a combined three shutout innings.
The Gnats (4-7) scored their only run in the second inning. With one out, DH Stefan Sabol doubled and scored on 2B JC Rodriguez's single into right field. Rodriguez, who was 3-for-4, had the best night of any Gnats' hitter.
Braves starter RHP Chad Sobotka (1-1, 6.00) earns the win after allowing just three hits over his five innings of work.
Twice in the last three innings - in the seventh and ninth - the Gnats put the tying run at third with two outs, but could not produce the hit to tie the game.
The Sand Gnats and Braves will conclude their three-game series tomorrow at 7:05 PM. RHP Corey Oswalt (1-0, 4.22) will take the mound for the Gnats, while Rome will send RHP Max Povse (1-1, 0.90) to the hill. Gates will open at 6:00 PM for the final game of the Sand Gnats Opening Week.
