Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release

The Kannapolis Intimidators, one day after playing a nearly flawless game, made mistakes in the field, on the basepaths and they couldn't provide timely hitting at the plate as their late comeback fell short against the Asheville Tourists on Friday at Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium in a 5-3 loss.

Andre Rienzo put together his second straight outing where he did not allow an earned run, but the Tourists (26-35) scored three unearned runs in the second inning to take an early lead. The Tourists were boosted by the first of two errors by Jesus Villegas that helped extend the inning and eventually the advantage. Rienzo (0-2) went a season-high six innings and did so with eight strikeouts and not an earned run against him. He has a streak of ten straight.

The Intimidators (29-32) had a great opportunity in the third inning off Tourists starter Jonathan Vargas (1-6) as they got a leadoff walk from Jake Oester before Daniel Wagner singled. With first and second and no one down, Villegas hit one to the wall in right field, but Wagner stumbled around second base, having to stay there, keeping Villegas to a single. Jordan Cheatham showed bunt and missed on the next pitch, and Wagner was erased on a pickoff after he ranged too far off second base. Villegas was then thrown out at second trying to steal for the second out of the inning. After a single, a walk and another single loaded the bases, Jose Vargas stuck out to end the inning, after six reached base in a row and one run scored in the inning.

Vargas picked up his first win of the season as he went five innings, allowing six hits and walking four, his bullpen would then take over for him in the sixth.

Off the Intimidators bullpen, the Tourists grabbed what would prove to be two important insurance runs as in the ninth, Sheng-An Kuo allowed a single, a hit by pitch and a walk to load the bases with no one out and bring the tying run to the plate. With the bases loaded the Tourists brought on Leuris Garcia for the save and he got Jake Oester to pop out on the first pitch. Wagner then walked, scoring a run and putting the tying run at first base. However, Garcia got a groundout and a pop out to end the ballgame, with the tying run still at first base.

The loss for the Intimidators splits the series at one game apiece with the rubber game coming on Saturday at 7:05. The Intimidators will look to Cameron Bayne for victory and the Tourists will put Wes Musick on the mound.
