Augusta GreenJackets News Release
Augusta, GA - The Augusta GreenJackets committed four of their five errors on Friday night in the fourth inning as the Hickory Crawdads scored twice in the frame en route to a 2-1 win over the GreenJackets in front of 4,832 fans at Lake Olmstead Stadium.
After Chris Heston wiggled out of three separate innings that saw the Crawdads put runners on in scoring position - one of which with the bases loaded - the wheels fell off for the entire GreenJackets team in the fifth.
Travis Adair walked to open the inning off Heston and with one out, advanced to second when Ryan Cavan's feed to second on a would-be double play ball went wide of the bag for the inning's first miscue. Adair broke to steal third and scored when Tommy Joseph's throw went into left field on the inning's second error. With Leury Garcia at second and the âDads up a run, Heston's pickoff throw to second went into centerfield for error number three to move Garcia to third. Garcia scored when Chris Dominguez's throw home on a Miguel Velazquez bouncer to third was dropped by Joseph on the inning's fourth miscue.
The Jackets got an unearned run of their own in the fifth to close the gap to one. Luke Anders was at third after a leadoff double when Leury Garcia booted Evan Crawford's grounder to short, allowing Anders to score Augusta's first and only run. After the error, Hickory starter Joe Wieland settled down to retire the last seven hitters he faced. Wieland (5-4) allowed one unearned run on three hits in seven innings, with a walk and seven strikeouts.
Heston (2-6) threw well for the GreenJackets but emerged as the tough-luck loser after the rough fifth inning. He surrendered two unearned runs on three hits and two walks with five strikeouts.
After the GreenJackets were retired in order in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings, Augusta got a pair of runners on in the ninth inning against Trevor Hurley. Ryan Lollis reached on an error by Adair while Cavan followed with a single. Hurley buckled down to strikeout the next three hitters to earn his seventh save of the year, stranding the potential tying and winning runs for the Jackets.
The GreenJackets remain a game ahead of the Savannah Sand Gnats in the Southern Division race thanks to the Gnats loss on Friday. Jorge Bucardo (5-2, 1.78) takes the ball for the GreenJackets in the rubber match between the league's two division leaders and will be opposed by Robbie Ross (8-4, 1.92). First pitch will come at 7:05 p.m. with the pregame action beginning at 6:50 p.m. on WRDW AM 1630, www.greenjacketsbaseball.com and www.wrdwam.com.
