Hickory Crawdads News Release
AUGUSTA, GA - The Hickory Crawdads capitalized on poor Augusta GreenJackets fielding, defeating the GreenJackets, 2-1, before 4,832 fans at Lake Olmstead Stadium on Friday night. The 'Dads remain tied with the Lakewood BlueClaws for first in the Northern Division with eight games left in the first half.
All the scoring happened in the fifth inning, beginning with Hickory (36-26) scoring the first two runs of the game. 2B Travis Adair led the inning off with a walk against Augusta starter RHP Chris Heston (2-6, 5.74 ERA). SS Leury Garcia then hit into a fielder's choice attempt by 2B Ryan Cavan, but his throw to second pulled SS Ydwin Villegas off the bag, allowing Adair to reach safely. Later in the inning, Adair stole third and came in to score when C Tommy Joseph's throw to third wound up in left field; Garcia took second on the play. Garcia then took third on an errant pickoff throw by Heston, to move up 90 feet for CF Miguel Velazquez. Velazquez grounded to third, but 3B Chris Dominguez's throw to the plate was mishandled, enabling Garcia to score on the fielder's choice, handing the 'Dads a 2-0 lead.
The GreenJackets (37-25) answered with a run of their own in the bottom half of the fifth against Crawdads starter RHP Joe Wieland (5-4, 4.01 ERA). 1B Luke Anders smacked a leadoff double off the right field wall and moved to third on a groundout by LF Dan Cook. After Joseph walked to put runners at the corners with two out, CF Evan Crawford reached on a fielding error by Garcia at short, allowing Anders to come in from third, to account for the final tally of 2-1.
Wieland pitched seven innings in which he allowed just the one unearned run on three hits and a walk with seven strikeouts to pick up the win for Hickory. RHP Tyler Tufts and RHP Trevor Hurley each dealt a scoreless inning of relief, with Hurley recording his seventh save of the season. Heston gave up two unearned runs on three hits and two walks while fanning five in five innings, to get handed the loss for Augusta.
Garcia was 3-for-4 at the plate and 2-for-3 stealing bases on the night for the Crawdads, extending his league lead to 32 swipes. RF Jared Prince extended his hitting streak to eight games with a single in the top of the eighth.
