HAGERSTOWN, Md. - Zoilo Almonte went 3-for-5 with a pair of solo home runs, as the Charleston RiverDogs scorched the Hagerstown Suns, 8-2, in South Atlantic League action at Municipal Stadium Friday night.
The RiverDogs won their third straight game and for the seventh time in nine games in improving to 29-32, while Hagerstown has dropped five games in a row and sits at 30-32.
Almonte staked Charleston to a 1-0 lead in the second by clubbing his seventh home run of the season to right field off Hagerstown starter Paul Demny.
Almonte hit his second solo homer of the game and eighth of the campaign to right-centerfield in the fourth for a 2-0 advantage. Kyle Higashioka followed with a walk, reached second on a wild pitch, took third on Rob Lyerly's single and then scored on DeAngelo Mack's double-play groundout to make the score 3-0.
Hagerstown cut the score to 3-2 in the bottom half on a two-run double by Destin Hood against Charleston's Kelvin Perez.
Higashioka knocked a RBI double off the centerfield wall in the seventh for a 4-2 Charleston lead, while Emerson Landoni contributed a pinch-hit two-run single to finish the three-run frame and give the RiverDogs a 6-2 cushion.
Slade Heathcott and J.R. Murphy singled to lead off the ninth against Glenn Gibson. With runners at first and third, Murphy broke for second which allowed Heathcott to steal home as Sandy Leon's throw bounced into centerfield for a 7-2 lead. Almonte looped a RBI single to left field for his third hit and the final 8-2 count.
Perez (3-3) battled through 7.0 innings in collecting his first win since April 27, allowing just two runs on four hits with three walks and four strikeouts. Demny (4-2) lost for the first time since April 12, giving up seven hits and three runs in 4.1 innings.
Almonte's performance was accompanied by two hits each from Heathcott, Higashioka and Jimmy Paredes to lead Charleston's 13-hit arsenal. The 17 runs the team has scored this series is the most in a two-game stretch for the RiverDogs in 2010.
The final game of this three-game series is Saturday at 7:05 p.m. with Charleston pitching southpaw Josh Romanski (1-1, 6.00 ERA) against Hagerstown left-hander Danny Rosenbaum (1-3, 1.85 ERA), who will be the starting pitcher for the Northern Division at the 51st SAL All-Star Game at Fluor Field in Greenville, S.C. on June 22.
