Inferno burn Chiefs 5-2
December 5, 2007 - ECHL (ECHL)
Columbia Inferno News Release
The Columbia Inferno (9-9-2-2, 22 points) overcame a slow start and scored five consecutive third period goals to beat the visiting Johnstown Chiefs (9-9-0-1, 19 points) 5-2 on Wednesday night.
Johnstown drew first blood with less than two minutes left in the first when winger Jason Spence scored his third goal of the year, knocking a puck past goalie Todd Ford and into the net from in close.
The two sides skated at deadlock for most of the second period until the Chiefs padded their lead at 19:29. Mike Falk put Johnstown up 2-0 when he scored tipped in a perfect cross-crease pass from Nicolas Bachand on Ford's glove side. It was the last goal Ford would allow, giving his team an opportunity to claw back into the game.
The third period started with a fight between Liam Huculak and the Chiefs' Kris Kasper. The Inferno, feeding off the energy of the fight, erupted in the third period when center Tyler Doig converted on a Jeff Miles pass at 4:09 on the power play to score the first of the team's five consecutive goals, and Doig's third of the year. Defenseman Patrick Wellar's fourth of the season tied the game at 7:28 when his blast from the point found its way past Chiefs goalie Andrew Penner. Rookie winger Jeremy Hall then scored what would prove to be the game winner less than two minutes later when his shot from the slot beat Penner's blocker side for his second of the season. Miles padded the lead 4-2 at 10:50 of the third when, while on a two-on-one, he collected a drop pass from winger Owen Fussey and slipped a low saucer shot past Penner's left leg from the far circle; the goal was Miles' 12th of the year. Defenseman Todd Perry notched the game's final goal (and his third of the year) at 16:24 on the power play with assists to Miles and Fussey.
Ford finished with 26 saves on 28 shots, while Penner stopped 24 of 29.
The Inferno return to the Carolina Coliseum on Friday, Dec. 7 to host the Mississippi Sea Wolves at 7:05 p.m. Season tickets, group tickets, fundraisers and the coolest birthday parties in town are all available by calling 803.256.7825 or by logging on to the all-new columbiainferno.com
