Wheeling Nailers News Release

READING, PA - The Reading Royals used three, second period goals to beat the Wheeling Nailers 4-1, Wednesday at the Sovereign Center. The Nailers are now 8-9-1-1 on the year while the Royals improved to 12-8-1-0.

While neither team scored during the first period, the Royals had a goal disallowed just 2:04 into the game. With Joe Zappala on a breakaway, John Curry made the initial save only to have Zappala kick the rebound into the net.

The second period did not feature a single penalty but it did account for four of the five goals in the game. Reading opened the scoring 4:45 into the middle period. Mike Salekin's wrist shot from the top of the face-off circle went through Curry for his first goal of the season.

Ned Havern responded with the equalizer at 9:14. Jon D'Aversa set up Havern on the face-off dot and his shot deflected off a defenders' stick and into the net. It was Havern's seventh goal and first since returning from the Wilke-Barre/Scranton Penguins on Saturday.

Kevin Schaeffer and Malcom MacMillan added goals at 13:27 and 16:55 respectively to put the Royals ahead 3-1 after two periods of play. Schaeffer, who played defense in front of Curry last season at Boston University, ripped a wrist shot off the cross-bar that banked down into the goal. Ned Lukacevic found MacMillan open on the backdoor for a tap in.

The lone power-play goal of the game came 3:01 into the third. Lukacevic and MacMillan set up Dany Roussin at the side of the goal for his third of the season.

Curry looked solid in his Wheeling Nailers debut, stopping 26 of 30 including a number of nice saves. He was assigned from the Baby Penguins on Tuesday.

Wheeling's three-game road trip continues Friday in Dayton. The Nailers will take on the Bombers at 7pm before heading back to Reading for a 7:05pm faceoff on Saturday. Sunday is the next home game for the Nailers when they take on the Elmira Jackals at 6:05pm. Fans are encouraged to bring their own skates and gloves and skate with the team and Santa after the game.
