Akron RubberDucks News Release
AKRON, OH - Cleveland Indians designated hitter Travis Hafner will begin a Major League Rehab Assignment tonight with the Akron Aeros.
Hafner, 34, was placed on the disabled list May 20 with a right oblique strain and has not played since.
In 32 games with the Tribe in 2011, Hafner is hitting .345 (39-for-113) with eight doubles, five home runs, 22 RBI, 13 walks, a .409 one-base percentage and a .549 slugging percentage.
The 6'3, 240 lb. slugger was the centerpiece of a trade between the Indians and the Texas Rangers December 6, 2002 that sent right-handed pitcher Ryan Drese and catcher Einar Diaz to the Lone Star State.
Prior to 2011, Hafner has hit a career 176 home runs with 175 coming in a Tribe uniform. He has a career batting average of .281 with a 220 doubles and 603 RBI in 941 games coming into the 2011 season.
The Jamestown, North Dakota native hit .305 with 33 home runs and 108 RBI in 2005 finishing fifth in American League MVP voting, which was the Indians best finish since Roberto Alomar finished fourth in 2001. In 2006, Hafner clubbed 42 home runs and drove in 117 runs while hitting .308, which was good enough for an eighth place finish in the American League MVP voting.
Hafner has played three career games with the Aeros in 2005 going 0-for-9 with a walk.
Hanfer is the fifth Indian to make a Major League Rehab Assignment with Double-A Akron. Outfielder Grady Sizemore, right-handed pitchers Joe Smith and Carlos Carrasco and infielder Jason Donald have all made rehab assignments this season with the Aeros.
