Richmond Flying Squirrels News Release
RICHMOND, VA - The Richmond Flying Squirrels (31-32) couldn't climb out of an early hole, and fell to the Binghamton Mets (21-41), 6-4, in the opener of a three-game series in front of 6,685 on Tuesday night at The Diamond.
The B-Mets erupted upon hearing the starting bell, collecting five runs on five hits in the first inning at the expense of Squirrels' left-hander Ryan Verdugo. Jonathan Malo started the ballgame with a single, and moved to second base on a ground out. Josh Satin made it 1-0 Binghamton with an RBI single to left field. A batter later, Verdugo walked Allan Dykstra to put two runners aboard. Salomon Manriquez then rifled a two-run double into the alley in left-center field for a 3-0 lead. Jordany Valdespin and Eric Campbell capped the inning with back-to-back RBI singles for a 5-0 lead.
The Squirrels started to chip away in the bottom of the first inning, thanks to a pair of Binghamton errors. Justin Christian got the Squirrels started with a lead-off double off of Binghamton starter Tobi Stoner. Charlie Culberson then reached on an error on the shortstop Valdespin. On an attempted double-steal, an error was charged to the third baseman Satin, as he allowed a throw to glance off his mitt into left field. Christian scored on the play and Culberson advanced to third base. Roger Kieschnick brought him in with a sacrifice-fly to left field, as Richmond closed to 5-2.
Reese Havens got a run back for Binghamton when he homered off Verdugo with one out in the second inning. The solo-shot to right-center field was the second of the season for Havens, and put Binghamton in front, 6-2.
Richmond chopped two runs off the lead in the bottom of the second. The rally began when Stoner hit Nick Noonan with a pitch to lead off the inning. Noonan was forced to leave the ballgame, and Ryan Lormand came on as a pinch-runner. Juan Perez and Jose Flores each singled to load the bases with nobody out. Christian brought home a run with a ground out, and Culberson made it 6-4 with an infield-single.
Verdugo (4-2) righted the ship, and kept the B-Mets at bay over his final three innings of work. He retired to the loss after five innings, having conceded six earned runs on eight hits. He walked one and struck out six.
Stoner (2-2) also departed after five innings, having allowed four runs - two earned - on four hits. He earned his second win of the season, while walking two, hitting Noonan, and striking out five. Right-hander Ricky Brooks followed and worked two scoreless innings of relief. Right-hander Erik Turgeon worked the final 1 2/3 innings for his fourth save of the season.
Right-handers Edwin Quirarte and Dan Otero combined for four innings of scoreless relief for the Squirrels in the defeat.
Game two of the series is scheduled for 7:05 PM on Wednesday night at The Diamond. RHP Henry Sosa (1-0, 2.00) will make the start for Richmond against RHP Brandon Moore (5-4, 3.92) for the B-Mets. For tickets or more information, please visit SquirrelsBaseball.com.
