Portland Outlasts Erie 5-4 in Series Opener

The SeaWolves two-game winning streak was snapped by the Portland Sea Dogs on Tuesday night at Jerry Uht Park 5-4.

The SeaWolves struck first in the bottom of the second against Portland starter Stephen Fife. Audy Ciriaco tripled with one out and scored on a Michael Bertram groundout for a 1-0 lead. With two outs, Michael Rockett singled to center bringing Adam Calderone to the plate. Calderone laced a shot down the left field line that rattled around in the Erie bullpen, Calderone hustled around for an inside the park home run and a 3-0 Erie lead.

Erie held the lead until the top of the fifth when the Sea Dogs tied the game off of Erie starter Casey Crosby. Chih-Hsieu Chiang led off with a walk and Tim Federowicz singled bringing the tying run to the plate in Reynaldo Rodriguez. Rodriguez nailed a game-tying three-run home run over the wall in left making it a 3-3 game.

The game remained tied until the top of the seventh. With one out, Oscar Tejeda reached on an infield single against reliever Rob Waite. Jorge Padron gave Portland the lead for good with a two-run home run to right making it 5-3.

Erie got one run back in the bottom of the seventh against reliever Miguel Gonzalez. Jamie Johnson led off and walked and Brandon Douglas singled for his third hit of the game. Francisco Martinez singled home Johnson making it 5-4, but the 'Wolves would get no closer.

Reliever Blake Maxwell earned his fifth save keeping the 'Wolves scoreless over the final 1.2 innings.

Waite (2-2) took the loss allowing two runs on two hits with no walks and two strikeouts in 2.1 innings.

Crosby took the no-decision allowing three runs on four hits with three walks and two strikeouts in 5.2 innings of work.

Erie hosts Portland in the middle game of a three-game series on Wednesday night at Jerry Uht Park.7:05 First Pitch. Righty Jacob Turner (1-1, 3.05 ERA) takes the mound for Erie against RHP Brock Huntzinger (3-4, 6.34 ERA).
