Indians Earn walk-off victory over Iowa on the Fourth of July

July 6, 2022 - International League (IL)
Indianapolis Indians News Release

ABOUT THE FOURTH'S FIRST NINE: Indianapolis took the lead early, outscoring Iowa 3-1 in the first inning. The first four batters of the game reached base safely with a one-out, two-RBI single by Cal Mitchell and subsequent throwing error putting the Indians on top. A one-out, two-run homer off the bat of Narciso Crook then levelled the game at 3-3 in the top of the fifth inning.

ABOUT THE ON-FIELD FIREWORKS: After Iowa scored one without recording a hit in the top of the 10th, the Indians were forced into a comeback scenario in the bottom half. With Mason Martin on second base as the automatic runner and Carter Bins on first following a hit-by-pitch, chaos ensued to place the game-winning runs in scoring position. Jared Oliva missed a bunt attempt and Martin, caught in-between second and third on a subsequent throw to second base, raced to third and slid in safely around the tag. With the sellout crowd of 13,911 behind him, Kevin Newman smacked a two-run, seeing-eye single into center field to give the Indians a walk-off victory over Iowa on the Fourth of July, 5-4.

WALK IT OFF: The Indians' Fourth of July walk-off win on Monday night was their fourth on the holiday in Victory Field history and the first since 2006. Kevin Newman, who singled home two runs in the 10th for a come-from-behind victory, joins Yurendell DeCaster (two-run homer in 2006), Peter Bergeron (two-out single in 2004) and Mike Coolbaugh (10th-inning single in 2001) in recording a walk-off hit for the Indians on the Fourth. In 2004, Peter Bergeron smacked his two-out single in the ninth vs. Louisville in front of a Victory Field era holiday-record 16,062 fans. Monday also marked Indianapolis' fifth walk-off win this season.

HELLO, NEWMAN: Kevin Newman recorded his third consecutive three-hit game on Monday night, with his final hit coming as the game-winner for Indianapolis in the 10th inning. He's currently working an 11-game hitting streak, which is tied with Cal Mitchell's active streak as the longest among Indians batters this season. Since the second game of his first rehab assignment on 5/19 (1), he is hitting .429 (18-for-42) with three doubles, six RBI and only five strikeouts. He also has registered a perfect fielding percentage in 72.0 innings between second base and shortstop.

CAL CLEARS 'EM: After spending the last month in the big leagues, Mitchell returned to the Indians lineup and picked up where he left off to extend his Triple-A hitting streak to 11 games, five of which have been multi-hit showings. Down 1-0 with the bases loaded in the bottom of the first on Monday night, Mitchell drove in two with a sharp single to right field and a throwing error on the plate scored another, setting Mitchell on second base. With the bases loaded this season, Mitchell is 4-for-6 with two doubles and nine RBI. Since the beginning of his hitting streak on 5/17, he is hitting .419 (18-for-43) with a .934 OPS. In 39 games with Indianapolis this season, Mitchell is hitting .331 (48-for-145) with a .510 slugging percentage and .891 OPS.

BAE'S BACK: After going hitless in three consecutive games, his first such streak since April, Ji-Hwan Bae has bounced back in a big way with multi-hit performances in each of his last two games. He has reached base safely in 58 of his 71 games played and ranks fourth among all International League qualifiers with a .310 average (85-for-274) this season. Along with batting average, the 22-year-old ranks among league leaders in runs scored (3rd, 53), hits (T-3rd, 85) and stolen bases (T-4th, 20).

TONIGHT: The Indians will look to build on their first Fourth of July win since 2018 on Monday with a win tonight vs. the I-Cubs at Victory Field. This is the second series between the two teams this season and the first at Victory Field after Indy took four of six games at Principal Park earlier this year. For the Indians today, Jerad Eickhoff will make his second appearance and first start vs. Iowa this season after he fanned seven batters over 4.0 two-run relief innings on 4/27 at Principal Park. In 2015, hes made one start at Iowa with Round Rock and earned the win with 10 strikeouts over 7.0 innings. Countering for Iowa will be Luke Farrell, who made one career start vs. Indy with Louisville in 2017.

HOME GROWN: Jerad Eickhoff earned his second consecutive Triple-A win and third in his last four games with Indianapolis last Thursday at Nashville. He now leads the team with five wins this season. Each of his last four starts since 5/31 at Omaha have been for 5.0-plus innings after he failed to cross the 5.0-inning mark in his first nine outings. He surrendered two runs in his first start back since being designated for assignment by Pittsburgh and fanned a season-high tying seven batters. In starts where he throws at least 5.0 innings, Eickhoff is 3-0 with a 3.04 ERA (7er/20.2ip) with 18 strikeouts.

THIS DATE IN 2019: After winning five straight games with a 1.78 ERA (7er/35.1ip) in Double-A, James Marvel made a statement in his Triple-A debut. Marvel went the distance in Game 2 of a doubleheader vs. Toledo, tossing 7.0 three-hit innings with six strikeouts to earn his first Indians win and sixth straight in the minors. Two runs in the second inning and a solo home run by Ke'Bryan Hayes in the third gave Marvel run support and led to a twinbill sweep of the Mud Hens.
