I-Cubs Snap Six-Game Skid

Iowa Cubs News Release

INDIANAPOLIS, IN - The Iowa Cubs (35-44) beat the Indianapolis Indians (38-40) in comeback fashion on Wednesday night at Victory Field, evening the series at one game apiece by a final score of 4-1.

Both starting pitchers were locked in through their first few innings. For Indianapolis, Jerad Eickhoff allowed one single in each of the first two frames, but followed it up with four straight one-two-three innings. When he sent down the first two batters of the seventh, the righty had retired 16 straight Iowa hitters and struck out seven.

While not quite as dominant, Iowa starter Luke Farrell held his own, too. He completed 4.2 innings - his longest outing since May 18 - and allowed just one run on a solo shot from Travis Swaggerty in the second inning. Farrell allowed three hits and two walks but struck out a season-high five batters. He exited the game in the fifth inning with the I-Cubs down 1-0.

After flying through his first six innings, Eickhoff ran into trouble in the seventh. He put away the first two Iowa hitters, but Greg Deichmann doubled for the I-Cubs' first hit since the second inning. One batter later, Jackson Frazier hit an RBI single for his second hit of the game, tying the score up at one run apiece.

Both bullpens wiggled out of trouble in the eighth, with Aaron Fletcher stranding the bases loaded in the top half, and Steven Brault leaving two Indians aboard in the bottom half. With Cam Alldred on the mound for Indianapolis in the ninth, though, the I-Cubs led off the inning with a single and a walk. Cristofer Melendez took over from there, and his first batter, John Hicks, sent a ball deep to left field, giving the I-Cubs their first lead of the game, at 4-1.

Erich Uelmen got the ninth for the I-Cubs, and though he walked his first hitter, he followed it up with a groundout and two strikeouts to secure his fifth save of the season and a victory for the I-Cubs.

POSTGAME NOTES:

Steven Brault pitched a scoreless inning and earned the win in his Iowa Cubs debut.

Jackson Frazier extended his hitting streak to a season-high five games with his two-for-three night.

John Hicks' home run was his eighth of the year, but his first three-run blast. He is just the fourth I-Cub to hit a three-run homer this season.

The I-Cubs' are now 3-11 in road games where their opponent scores first.

Iowa will face off with Indianapolis again tomorrow for game three of the six-game series. First pitch between the I-Cubs and the Indians is set for 6:05 CT. For more information and tickets, visit www.iowacubs.com.
