In Good Hans: Hanson Pitches Stingers to Sweep of Honkers
July 17, 2015 - Northwoods League (Northwoods)
Willmar Stingers News Release
Rochester, Minn. - Tyler Hanson rebounded in a big way for the Stingers Friday night.
After suffering his first loss of the season in his last start, which came against Rochester, Hanson dominated the Honkers this time around, throwing seven sparkling innings in a 7-1 Willmar win.
The only blemish for Hanson was a third inning home run he allowed to the Honkers' Ryan Summers, but the Stingers offense made sure their starter had plenty of run support. After the Honkers tied the game at one in the bottom of the third, the Stingers (32-17, 10-6 second half) scored six times over the next two innings to open up a lead they would never look back from.
The Stingers took the lead in the fourth with an RBI single by Tyler Leffler, while a five-run fifth inning put them in the driver's seat. In that fifth inning, the Stingers sent nine batters to the plate, with Ky Parrott, Eddie Estrada and Leffler coming up with the run scoring hits. Parrott singled home Sean Beesley to make it a 3-1 lead, and Reagan Fowler would score a batter later on a wild pitch. Eddie Estrada had the big hit of the inning, a two-run single to make it 6-1. He would score later in the inning off Leffler's base knock.
With the newfound six-run lead, Hanson found a groove. After the Honkers (29-22, 9-8) put runners on second and third in the fourth, Hanson retired the next 10 batters in a row. The only hit he allowed the rest of the way was with two gone in the seventh, his final inning of work.
Hanson allowed just four hits all night long, struck out six batters, and walked just one. The win improved his season record to 4-1.
Willmar returns home now for two games against Mankato on Saturday and Sunday, with Christmas in July slated for Saturday night and Adult Jersey Giveaway Night on Sunday. The first 300 fans Saturday night will receive a Stingers ornament and there will be postgame fireworks.
