Brunner's Birthday Start Ends in 1-0 Victory
July 17, 2015 - Northwoods League (Northwoods)
Green Bay Rockers News Release
St. Cloud, MN.- On his 22nd birthday Sam Brunner started the game strong and the Bullfrogs (31-20/9-7) rode his unbelievable performance all the way to the finish, beating the St. Cloud Rox (31-17/12-4), 1-0.
After a heartbreaking 3-2 loss of the resumed suspended game from May 29th, the Bullfrogs retorted with some major pitching prowess. This was the sixth shutout of the season for Green Bay, and their first victory since Sunday's 7-1 win over Kenosha.
Once again, the Bullfrogs bats got going early with a run in the first inning. Logan Taylor (Louisville) charged to first after a Jake Farr (Tennessee Tech) error at third. Robb Paller (Columbia) then hit Taylor to second on a groundout, as Taylor swiped third for his 20th stolen base this season. He scored on a Danny Rosenbaum (Louisville) sacrifice fly putting the Bullfrogs ahead 1-0.
Sam Brunner set down the Rox in order the first four innings but encountered his only spell of trouble in the fifth. After an error, and the first two Rox hits of the contest by John Sansone (Florida State) and Lee Miller (Davidson), Brunner fought his way out of a bases loaded jam to keep the Rox without any runs.
Looking to add insurance, the Bullfrogs could not capitalize on a bases loaded situation themselves in the sixth inning when Desi Ammons (Belmont) struck out and Ty Blankmeyer (St. John's) grounded into a fielder's choice to end the frame.
With Jake Stolley (Northwestern) taking the ball in the ninth, he surrendered a walk to Brett Pope (Western Carolina) and a single to Joe Tietjen (UNC-Asheville), followed by a sacrifice bunt from Austin Ahtmann (Minnesota). He was taken out of the game for Jeremy Graf (Flagler).
Graf walked his first batter, John Sansone (Florida State), but improbably the Bullfrogs again slid out of a hectic scenario with Graf's strikeout of Miller (Davidson) and fly-out of Liam Bedford (Doane).
Sam Brunner (4-2) picked up the victory, Zach Pop (3-2) the loss, and Jeremy Graf (10) with the save.
The Bullfrogs, who went 1-1 on the day, are 1.5 games behind the Kenosha Kingfish in the South Division second half standings, two games on the season overall.
Tomorrow's starter for Green Bay against St. Cloud is Ryan Radue (UConn) (4-0/3.41ERA/29IP/31K-21BB) who makes his eighth start this campaign. Game time from Joe Faber Field is 7:05PM.
