Madison Mallards News Release
Madison, Wis. - Field manager Donnie Scott and the Madison Mallards (11-7, 31-22) defeated the Lakeshore Chinooks (7-13, 24-28) in both games of Friday's double-header at Warner Park. Game one, which was a continuation of Thursday's rainout, saw the Mallards club three extra-base hits en route to a 7-6 victory. The seven-inning nightcap witnessed Madison sock three more extra-base hits, lifting the Mallards to a 6-2 win to wrap up their two-game series.
Brad Boegel (Murray State) received the winning decision on the mound for the Mallards in the opener, allowing just one unearned run home across three innings in which he struck out five and walked one. Mike Kaelin (Buffalo) recorded his seventh save of the summer despite a shaky ninth inning - 1.0 IP, 2 H, 2 ER, 2 BB, K - against a potent Chinooks lineup. Jean Ramirez (Illinois State) and Jonathan Quintana (Barry University), meanwhile, each provided a home run in the comeback effort for the Mallards, who entered Friday facing an early 2-0 deficit against their divisional opponent.
Justin Watts (Northern Kentucky) tabbed the winning decision for Madison in the nightcap, allowing no runs across two innings of four-strikeout ball in relief of starting pitcher Nate Hoffmann (Middle Tennessee State), who ceded a pair of runners across three frames of work. Anthony Gonsolin (St. Mary's College) tallied a three-run double to hoist the Mallards to victory, while Scott Tyler (Ball State) supplied his third home run of the summer in the bottom of the fifth. Tyler Frohwirth (Minnesota State) earned his first save through working scoreless innings in the sixth and seventh.
With both victories behind them, the Mallards will turn their attention toward the opener of a two-game road set at C.O. Brown Stadium against the Battle Creek Bombers, which is scheduled for a 6:05 p.m. first pitch on Saturday night.
