Iggulden Leads Barons to 4-2 Win at Grand Rapids
December 10, 2005 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Cleveland Barons News Release
GRAND RAPIDS, MI -- Mike Iggulden's three-point night led the Barons to their first consecutive road wins of the season as they beat Grand Rapids 4-2 on Saturday night. Nolan Schaefer earned his second win in-as-many-nights with a 29-save effort.
The AHL's fourth best power play, owned by the Griffins, converted the game's first goal at the 2:12 mark of the opening period. Kent McDonnell jammed home a pass play from Bryan Helmer and Clay Wilson that beat Barons goaltender Nolan Schaefer, making his second consecutive start in goal. The Barons answered with a power play goal of their own as Patrick Rissmiller scored his eighth of the season squeezing a tight-angled shot under the pads of Griffins' goaltender Jimmy Howard. Mike Iggulden and Ray DiLauro assisted on the tying goal. Cleveland then took their first lead of the night as Shane Joseph jammed home a rebound after Iggulden was denied on the Grand Rapids' doorstep. Jimmy Howard, reassigned earlier in the day from the Detroit Red Wings, started in goal for the Griffins with 9 first period saves.
The two teams skated through a scoreless second period with the Barons getting the better of the play out-shooting the Griffins 11-6 in the middle frame. The Barons were issued three power play chances during the period but could not convert to extend their lead. Grand Rapids failed on one power play chance of their own. The Barons out-shot Grand Rapids 11-6 in the second period.
The Griffins made a valiant comeback attempt, which came up short following a highlight and game-winning goal from rookie forward Mike Iggulden. Donald MacLean tied the game at 2-2 with his 12th of the year for the Griffins just 6:57 into the third period on an assist from Jiri Hudler. Iggulden then took over with a tremendous individual effort beating two defenders in the Grand Rapids' zone before slipping a puck between the legs of Howard to re-establish the one-goal lead. Steve Bernier closed out the scoring with an unassisted and empty net tally for a 4-2 win.
Tomorrow night the Barons will travel to Grand Rapids for a meeting with the North Division leading Griffins at 8pm EST. The game will be carried live via the B2 Networks with links to the broadcast available at www.clevelandbarons.net. The Barons then return home for a Sunday match up with the West Division leading Houston Aeros at 5pm EST. The Barons Family Fun Pack Ticket Special is available for Sunday's game and available at the Quicken Loans Arena Box Office.
