AHL American Hockey League

San Antonio defeats Omaha

December 10, 2005 - American Hockey League (AHL) News Release

The San Antonio Rampage jumped to an early 3-0 lead and held on to win their second straight game as Randall Gelech scored a goal and an assist and Steve Gainey recorded two assists Saturday night defeating the Omaha Ak-Sar-Ben Knights 3-1 at the Omaha Civic Auditorium. Karl Goehring stopped 24 of 25 shots to give the Rampage their first back-to-back road victory of the season and extend Omaha's home winless streak to four games.

Mike Bishai jump-started the Rampage's scoring assault when he extended his point streak to three games tucking the puck inside the left post past Omaha goaltender Brent Krahn to give the Rampage the lead at 8:56 in the first period. Gainey and Gelech were credited with the assists on the goal.

Rampage leading scorer, Layne Ulmer, drove the puck over the right shoulder of Krahn to tally another goal with a little over a minute later to give him his eighth goal on the season. Tim Jackman extended his point streak to two games assisting on the goal after he scored a goal of his own last night in Iowa. Ray Schultz also contributed an assist on Ulmer's goal, giving him his first point since joining the Rampage on Nov. 25.

Gelech, playing in his 100th AHL game, gave the Rampage a three-goal cushion at 13:01 of the second period. David Cornacchia tallied his fourth assist on the season as Gainey racked up his second assist of the night on Gelech's first goal since Oct. 16.

Knights defenseman Justin Taylor broke Goehring's first shutout bid of the season on a bizarre power-play opportunity with two minutes remaining in regulation. Omaha's Zenith Komarniski drove the puck in down the glass and while Goehring behind the net to play the puck, it took an odd hop and ricocheted to the slot. Taylor got there first and fired the puck into the empty net.

The Rampage (8-16-0-1) are now 2-0 on the six-game road trip and will face Omaha again tomorrow at 5 p.m.
