Idaho Steelheads News Release
Loveland, CO - Jesse Mychan scored twice in the third period to cap a bizarre contest Friday night as the Colorado Eagles defeated the Idaho Steelheads, 4-2, at the Budweiser Events Center in Loveland, CO.
There were 23 penalties whistled in all as the two teams combined for 13 power-play opportunities. Each team had one person ejected and Idaho had two apparent goals waved off, including one that would have tied the game in the third period.
A Kevin Young goal gave Colorado a 1-0 lead after 20 minutes but the Steelheads didn't wait long to even things up in the second period. A Tommy Grant centering feed from the left corner connected with Taylor Vause at the edge of the crease for an easy, tap-in goal at the 32-second mark of the second to tie the game at a goal apiece. Colorado would take the lead back on a Kevin Ulanski goal six minutes later as the Eagles held a 2-1 lead. Idaho would receive a major power-play opportunity late in the period following a Ray Sawada charging penalty that included a game misconduct, but the Steelheads could not capitalize and trailed by one going into the final frame.
Jesse Mychan extended Colorado's lead to 3-1 at the 1:46 mark of the third off a defensive-zone turnover by Idaho. Goaltender Josh Robinson made the initial save in close on Mychan, but Mychan gathered his own rebound and back-handed it home for the eventual game-winner.
Two minutes later, David deKastrozza was whistled for tripping and Idaho received a bench minor penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct as head coach Brad Ralph was ejected as well, giving Colorado a full, two-minute 5-on-3 power play. But the Steelheads came through, killing off the penalty. The momentum swung to Idaho at that point as the Steelheads inched closer on a James Isaacs goal at 6:28 of the third. Isaacs cut to the net from the left point and knocked home a centering pass from Mitch Wahl behind the Colorado net to make it a 3-2 game.
Moments later, Idaho players thought they had tied the game on a Mitch Wahl shot from the left wing, but referee Andrew Wilk said no-goal to keep Colorado on top, 3-2. Colorado picked up a big insurance goal at 14:45 of the third when Mychan redirected a Young shot over Robinson's shoulder to finish the scoring.
Robinson took the loss, stopping 30 of 34 shots. Adam Brown got the win for Colorado after stopping 26 of 28 shots. Both teams came up empty on the power play as the Steelheads went 0-6. Idaho's penalty-kill unit was a perfect seven-for-seven.
The Steelheads play at Colorado again Saturday night inside the Budweiser Events Center in Loveland, CO. Gametime is 7 PM and both games can be heard live on KTIK (1350 AM). The team returns home November 1 to host the Ontario Reign at CenturyLink Arena.
