South Carolina Stingrays News Release
Greenville, S.C. - Forward Scott Campbell scored the game-tying and game-winning goals in the final minute of regulation to give the South Carolina Stingrays (2-0-0-1) a 2-1 victory over the Greenville Road Warriors (2-1-0-0) at the Bon Secours Wellness Arena Friday night. Goaltender Jeff Jakaitis earned his second victory of the season making 24 saves.
The Stingrays and Road Warriors skated a scoreless two periods of action with both goaltenders standing tall. Jakaitis kept the Road Warriors off the scoreboard with 17 saves through 40 minutes including stops on two 2-on-1 breaks and denied forward J.M. Rizk all alone on top of the crease midway through the contest. Netminder Connor Knapp (L, 36 saves on 38 shots) backstopped the Road Warriors including 44 seconds of a 5-on-3 power play in the opening frame.
Road Warriors forward Andrew Carroll found the back of the net on the power play 5:33 into the third period with help from forwards Josh Nicholls and Brandon Hynes. In the final minute of action and Jakaitis pulled for the extra skater, Campbell tied the contest 1-1 at the 19:30 mark knocking in a rebound off a Scooter Vaughan shot from the point. The Stingrays won the ensuing faceoff and dumped the puck behind Knapp only to setup Campbell with 4.9 seconds remaining for the game-winning marker. Forwards Jordan Owens and Igor Gongalsky picked up the assists. The Stingrays finished the game 0-for-5 on the power play while the Road Warriors went 1-for-2.
