IceMen Freeze Gladiators in 4-1 Win

January 30, 2015 - ECHL (ECHL)
Evansville IceMen News Release

EVANSVILLE, Ind.- The Evansville IceMen, presented by Coors Light, stymied the Gwinnett Gladiators power play and offensively unleashed a scoring barrage to take a 4-1 victory. Evansville's penalty stopped 10 Gwinnett power plays and Jarret Lukin had a goal and an assist to lead the IceMen (12-25-4-2, 30 points) to the win.

Late in the first period, the IceMen got their first power play chance of the game. On the man advantage, Bo Driscoll worked the puck to Thomas Frazee along the goal line. Frazee found Robin Soudek in the high slot. Soudek fired a hard slap shot that snuck underneath the cross bar to give the IceMen a one-goal lead. Driscoll collected his first IceMen point on Soudek's first IceMen goal.

Chris Driedger made 11 saves in the opening frame to keep the Gladiators off the scoreboard. Evansville carried a 1-0 lead into the first intermission. Driedger made 39 saves to earn the game's second star.

Just 23 seconds into the second period, the IceMen added to their lead. Brandon Wong carried the puck out from behind the net and launched a backhanded shot past Adam Brown to give the IceMen a 2-0 lead. Myles Bell and Daniel Johnston earned the assists on Wong's team leading 14th of the season.

Later in the second period, Jarret Lukin stole the puck in the Gwinnett zone. Lukin rifled a shot at Brown who made the initial save, but Lukin tracked down the rebound and torched it into the net. The Assistant Captain's unassisted individual effort gave the IceMen a three goal lead and Lukin his ninth goal of the season.

Gwinnett answered later in the second period. Zach Yuen put in a back handed shot to cut the IceMen lead to 3-1 entering the third period.

In the final frame, the IceMen power play struck again. Lukin carried the puck through the center of the Gwinnett zone then hit a hard charging Troy Rutkowski, who blasted the puck past Brown to put the IceMen 4-1. Rutkowski's third goal of the season featured an assist from Patrick Kennedy.

Gwinnett launched 21 shots at Driedger in the third period, but the IceMen netminder denied all 21 shots. The Gladiators had 10 power plays, including six in the third period, but the IceMen penalty did not give up a single power play goal.

Head Coach Al Sims, recorded his first win on home ice. Evansville entered the win column for the first time since Jan. 10.
