
IceGators Sting The Rays 5-2

Charleston, SC â The Louisiana IceGators secured a 5-2 win over the South Carolina Sting Rays tonight in the seventh game of their eight game road trip. The IceGators (45-16-2) played their only game of the season against South Carolina (34-23-3) and secured two more points in the ECHL standings. Louisiana is second in the ECHL with 92 points, just five points behind the league-leading Wheeling Nailers (47-13-3).
Semir Ben-Amor scored his fifth point in two games with the opening goal at the North Charleston Coliseum. Kenny Corupe centered the puck to Konstantin Kalmikov took a shot on Kirk Daubenspeck, who spat up a rebound right to Ben-Amor. A backhand wrister put the puck in the net and the Gators on the board.
The IceGators took a 3-0 lead seven minutes into the second period on goals by Rod Sarich and Ed McGrane, who scored just 18 seconds apart.
Sarich corralled a turn-over and walked in on Kirk Daubenspeck, beating the netminder glove side for his fifth goal of the year.
McGrane caught a rebound from Alex Materukhin and wristed the puck into the twine for his 18th of the year. Bobby Brown collected his 36th assist on McGrane's goal.
Alex Materukhin scored his 25th goal on the power play when he redirected a shot from Bobby Brown that beat Daubenspeck from the slot.
The Sting Rays replaced Daubenspeck with David Brumby to open the third period in Charleston. The Sting Rays were able to come back and score two goals on Gustafson in the third period, both on the power play. Curtis Hupp and Boris Protsenko put the Rays on the board to avoid the shutout.
Kenny Corupe sealed the Sting Rays' fate with the fifth Gators' goal at the 18:45 mark of the third period. Jamie Johnson and Rod Sarich assisted on the empty netter.
Alex Materukhin, Kenny Corupe and Rod Sarich each earned one goal and one assist. Bobby Brown finished the game with two assists to bring his point tally to 70 (33g â 37p). Derek Gustafson faced 23 shots on goal from the Rays, while his teammates barraged the South Carolina netminders with 41 shots.
The IceGators will head to Florence, SC for the final game of their two week tour of the east coast. The puck will drop at 1:30 p.m. CST for the second tilt of the year between the Pride and Gators. Louisiana will take to the Frozen Swamp on Wednesday, March 17 at 7:05 p.m. to welcome the Columbus Cottonmouths for St. Patrick's Day. The St. Patty's Day game will feature a costume contest and $2 green beer.
