Fresno Falcons News Release
SAN DIEGO â Greg Barber scored three times and Mark Pederson recorded the game-winner and three assists to lead the San Diego Gulls to a 4-1 victory over the Fresno Falcons on Friday at the San Diego Sports Arena.
The Gulls opened the scoring at 7:15 of the first period off a clean face-off win in their offensive zone. Barber found himself all alone through the left circle, walked to the front of the net and beat Fresno goaltender Mike Brusseau to the glove side. Brusseau shut the door on the Gulls the rest of the period, though, to "preserve" a 1-0 deficit despite a 17-8 edge in shots for San Diego.
The Gulls added to their lead on the power play at 12:03 of the second. Pederson, the league's leading goal scorer, received a last-second dish from Barber before banging home his 39th of the year from right on the doorstep to give San Diego a 2-0 lead through 40 minutes.
Fresno found re-newed life in the third. Neil Wilkinson pinched to keep a puck in at the blue-line, which ended up on the stick of Kris Porter. Porter made his way to the high slot where he beat Gulls goaltender Trevor Koenig with a low wrist-shot through traffic at 7:15. The Falcons' brief rally ended four minutes later, though, as Pederson sent a cross-ice pass to Barber, who one-timed his second of the evening past Brusseau at 11:02 to restore San Diego's two-goal lead. Pederson would hook-up with Barber one more time with Brusseau pulled in favor of an extra attacker giving the rookie an empty-netter to complete the hat trick with under two minutes to play.
The loss ended Fresno's modest two-game winning streak, giving them a record of 18-36-6 on the season.
The Falcons and Gulls face-off against one another again tomorrow at the San Diego Sports Arena. The game can be heard live on KAAT 103.1 FM beginning at 6:50 p.m. with the Shop & Go Pre-game Show.
Fresno then returns home on St. Patrick's Day when they will be wearing St. Patty's Day specialty jerseys during their game against the Long Beach Ice Dogs at 7 p.m. at Save Mart Center. Following the game the club will auction off the game-worn sweaters in the Bulldog Foundation Room at Save Mart Center with all of the proceeds benefiting the United Way.
