Niagara IceDogs News Release

The Niagara IceDogs picked up a huge 3-2 shootout victory over the Owen Sound Attack at the Gatorade Garden City Complex on Thursday night!

The IceDogs would get on the board first as Brett Ritchie would not take long to get back into the action, picking up a great shorthanded goal on a one timer only 10:40 into his return to the IceDogs to make it 1-0. Unfortunately, the lead would not last as Owen Sound would score on the same powerplay to knot things up at 1-1. That would prove to be it for scoring in the frame as the teams headed into the intermission tied 1-1. Shots after one favoured Owen Sound 8-5.

The goaltenders would be the story in the second as both teams had their chances in the frame, but Christopher Festarini and Jordan Binnington would both be on their game, putting up zeroes in the frame and keeping things deadlocked at 1-1 after 40 minutes. Shots after two continued to favour Owen Sound 17-13.

The IceDogs would come out flying in the third, with Niagara having several near misses as they looked to take the lead in the first half of the second, but could not find the go ahead goal. While the IceDogs would carry the majority of the play in the first half of the third, it would be Owen Sound that would break the deadlock, scoring at the 12:20 mark of the frame to give the visitors a 2-1 lead. The IceDogs would be unfazed however, as they continued to battle and Steven Shipley would tip a Jesse Graham point shot past Binnington on the powerplay to tie things up again at 2-2 with 3:19 remain! The IceDogs would continue their pressure late in the period as they looked for the winner, but they would not be able to find the back of the net and the teams would head to overtime tied 2-2. Shots after regulation were 29-25 IceDogs.

Overtime would solve nothing as the IceDogs headed to their second consecutive shootout.

In the shootout the goaltenders would continue to be the story, as both goaltenders would be perfect through four shooters and Festarini would stop the fifth Owen Sound shooter, giving rookie Ben Hughes an opportunity to win it. Hughes would make the most of the opportunity, making a great move and sliding it by Binnington to give the IceDogs the big 3-2 win!

The IceDogs will now hit the road for the rest of the weekend as they head to Barrie on Saturday night before traveling to Kitchener on Sunday afternoon. They will next return home next Friday and Saturday when they play host to the Belleville Bulls and Peterborough Petes respectively. Tickets for these and all other IceDogs home games are still available and can be purchased at all IceDogs ticketing locations.
