January 10, 2013 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Kitchener Rangers News Release
Jonatan Tanus scored in the shootout to lead the Peterborough Petes to a 3-2 win over the Kitchener Rangers on Thursday night. Brent Pedersen and Evan McEneny scored the regulation goals for the Rangers.
The Petes jumped to a 1-0 lead just 32 seconds into the opening period. New captain Derek Mathers broke into the Rangers zone alone and fired a high shot over the right shoulder of netminder Joel Vienneau. Mathers' unassisted goal was his fourth of the season.
Former Rangers forward Nick Czinder added to Peterborough's lead with five minutes remaining before the intermission. The overage winger pounced on a rebound in front of the Kitchener net and moved it around the right pad of Vienneau. His fourth of the year was assisted by Jonatan Tanus and Clark Seymour.
The Petes out-shot the Rangers 12-10 through the opening 20 minutes.
Peterborough maintained a 2-0 lead through a scoreless middle frame. Kitchener led shots on goal 15-6 in the period.
Sophomore winger Brent Pedersen put the Rangers on the board two minutes into the third, chasing down a rebound and taking a few shots before shifting to his backhand and beating Andrew D'Agostini. Josh Sterk and Eric Ming earned the helpers on Pedersen's sixth of the season.
The Rangers pulled even with 9:33 remaining on the clock. Rearguard Evan McEneny fired a long shot from just inside the blueline that sailed by a screened D'Agostini. The unassisted goal was the Vancouver Canuck prospect's fourth of the year.
With the score deadlocked at 2-2, the game went to an extra frame. Each team fired 11 shots on goal in the third period.
Neither team scored during the overtime, sending the contest to a shootout. The Petes out-shot Kitchener 5-2 in the extra five minutes, but the Rangers finished the game with a 38-34 overall advantage.
Tanus scored the game winner for the Petes in the fourth round of the shootout, lifting Peterborough to a 3-2 win. D'Agostini stopped all four Rangers shooters.
The teams split the season series with one shootout win apiece. Kitchener's overall record sits at 22-13-1-5.
