IceDogs Fall to Kingston in 2-1 Shootout Loss
January 16, 2016 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Niagara IceDogs News Release
The IceDogs concluded their five game road trip falling to Kingston by a score of 2-1 on Saturday night. Niagara heads home with a 4-1 record on the trip.
The first 20 minutes of the game saw some good scoring chances for both teams, but the first look at action in the frame was a tilt halfway through the period which saw Niagara winger Nick Pastorious attempting to stir the pot by landing some heavy punches against his Kingston opponent. After both sides received offsetting fighting majors, momentum began to swing in Niagara's favour. Brendan Perlini kicked off the scoring on the powerplay, netting his 16th of the year and continuing his three game point streak in which he has three goals and one assist. The final shots of the period were 11-9 for Kingston.
Penalties were the story of the second as about 10 minutes of the period saw either the Frontenacs or the IceDogs on the power play/penalty kill. Kingston found the only marker of the period as they tied the game up 8:19 into the frame. Shots at the end of 40 minutes were 24-21 for the Frontenacs.
Each team's goaltender stood strong in the third period as neither team conceded a goal against despite multiple scrambles around the net. After 60 minutes the score was even, forcing the game into three-on-three overtime. Five minutes of OT would not solve anything between two of the league's top teams so a shootout had to be the deciding factor. Shots at the end of the game were 35-31 for Kingston.
In the shootout it was the Frontenacs who converted the first and only goal, walking away with the 2-1 victory over Niagara.
Tickets are still available for the IceDogs next home game on Thursday, January 21st vs Owen Sound Attack. This game makes the annual Pink in the Rink game in support of the Canadian Cancer Society. Proceeds will go towards women's cancer research, so be sure to wear pink on the 21st to show your support.
