Owen Sound Attack News Release
The Owen Sound Attack dismantled the visiting Erie Otters when the teams met at the Harry Lumley Bayshore Community Centre on Saturday, Jan. 16.
After opening up a four goal lead in the first period, the Attack would cruise to a 8-0 victory.
Twelve different Attack players registered a point on the evening, while six recorded multipoint games.
Michael McNiven put an exclamation mark on the win, pitching a 36 save shutout with a number of highlight reel saves.
Although Erie is ranked number one in the Canadian Hockey League rankings, it as the Attack who looked like the country's best team.
Their early jump payed off too.
With 6:57 gone in the opening period, Kevin Hancock pounced on the rebound of a Santino Centorame shot and deposited it behind Erie's Jake Lawr for his 6th of the season.
Then, just over two minutes later, Hancock would register an assist on Owen Sound's 2nd goal of the night when Markus Phillips was able to find the mesh behind a screened Lawr.
Phillips' 2nd goal of the year was also assisted by Petrus Palmu, and made it 2-0 just 9:01 into the game.
Owen Sound would then make it 3-0 with 3:10 to play in the first, capitalizing on a dominant shift down low by Justin Brack, Jaden Lindo, and Nick Suzuki.
Brack would reap the benefits of the line's work, banging home his 6th of the year with assists going to both of his linemates.
That line would make sure to connect once more before the end of the period as well.
With just 19 seconds on the clock, Suzuki would be the one to score, converting a wrap around with assists going to Brack and Lindo. Suzuki's 9th of the year would send the Attack to the 1st intermission up by four.
The Attack would eventually increase that lead to 5-0, but not until there was just 3:49 remaining in the 2nd period.
Bryson Cianfrone would force a turnover deep in the Otters' zone before finding a wide open Jonah Gadjovich in the slot, who made no mistake on his 7th goal of the year.
The Attack would continue their tear, scoring another last minute goal this time on a tally from Josh Sterk.
With just 16 seconds left in the middle stanza, captain Santino Centorame unleashed a howitzer which bounced off of the cross bar and landed directly on Sterk's stick, which allowed the overage forward to launch it into the empty cage. Damir Sharipzyanov would also assist on the play.
Owen Sound was able to make it through the first 40 minutes of the game without allowig a goal thanks to Michael McNiven's 29 saves on 29 shots, which included a penalty shot stop on Otters' captain Dylan Strome.
The Attack did eventually convert the touchdown, making it 7-0 with 5:21 left to play in the game on Damir Sharipzyanov's 2nd goal of the year. On a 5-on-3 Baywest Nissan Powerplay, Sharipzyanov used assists from Santino Centorame and Matthew Struthers to continue the rout.
Owen Sound capped off the scoring with 18 seconds left in the game, after Jaden Lindo scored his 11th of the year on a breakaway. Damir Sharipzyanov grabbed the lone assist on the play which made it an 8-0 final.
The Attack swept the Mac Taylor Corporation 3 Stars with Michael McNiven's 37 save shutout earning him 1st star honours. Kevin Hancock's goal and assist was enough for 2nd star, while Nick Suzuki's goal and assist earned him 3rd star honours.
Justin Brackwas named the game's Hatten Home Building Centre Hardest Working Player.
