IceCats vs. Philadelphia: First meeting of the season

The 'Cats travel to the 'City of Brotherly Love' for their first meeting of the season with the Phantoms. The Phantoms are currently fourth in the four-team South Division of the Western Conference. The Flyers AHL affiliate has a record of 25-27-5-4 for 59 points. They are 3-4-2-1 in their last 10 games. They are coming off a 5-1 win over the Manchester Monarchs in Philly on Sunday. Forward Peter White is currently 20th in the AHL scoring with 56 points in 58 games: 58(22/34/56). Fourteen of those 22 goals have come via the power play. Peter Vandermeer is first on the club and fourth in the AHL with 237 penalty minutes.

Their power play is ranked 25th in the 28 team AHL. The Phantoms have also allowed nine short-handed goals. Philadelphia is the third most penalized team, collecting 1603 PIM's or 26.3 minutes per game. They are in Syracuse for a game on Wednesday.

Saturday's contest will also mark the first-ever game between the Norfolk Admirals and the IceCats. Norfolk leads the Western Conference's South Division with a record of 31-18-8-4. The 74 points have them in third place overall in the Western Conference and fifth in the entire AHL. They lost to the Hershey Bear Sunday afternoon 2-1 in Hershey when they allowed two third period tallies.

Despite their record, they do not have a player in the Top 20 in scoring. They do, however, have the goaltender with the best goals against average in Craig Andersson. Andersson has a 1.84 GAA with a record of 14-6-3 in 24 games. Norfolk is 23-2-3-2 when leading after two periods. Former IceCats forward Mike Peluso is pacing the Admirals with 48 points. Through 55 games, the 2003 AHL PlanetUSA All-Star has 20 goals and 28 assists: 55(20/28/48).

'CAT TAILS:

* Despite being called-up to the St. Louis Blues, goalie Curtis Sanford is still in the Top 10 in goals against average. He has posted a 2.46 GAA. Sanford collected his first NHL shutout on Saturday, March 1 in a 2-0 Blues win over Minnesota.

* Greenfield, Massachusetts resident Chris Corrinet, factored into all three goals in Sunday's 3-3 tie against Hartford. He registered two goals and one assist. His second goal was the game-tying marker.

* IceCats rookie centerman John Pohl has missed the last 15 games due to injury. He, however, still ranks eighth in rookie scoring points, with 43. He has 16 goals and 27 assists in 47 games: 47(16/27/43).

* Friday and Saturday's match-ups against Philadelphia and Norfolk will mark the first and only opponents the IceCats face from the South Division this season. The 'Cats do not face Hershey or Wilkes-Barre/Scranton.

* The IceCats power play is ranked eighth, clicking 17.9% of the time.

* Worcester has taken a total of 2088 shots, averaging 33.14 per game. This ranks fourth in the AHL.

NOTES: The Worcester IceCats lost Friday night to the Portland Pirates, 4-1, at Worcester's Centrum Centre. Greg Day netted the only goal for Worcester in the 3rd period. Goaltender Phil Osaer made 25 saves in goal for the IceCats. Defenseman Terry Virtue recorded seven penalty minutes, giving him over 1,000 PIM's for his IceCats career.

3-3 TIE - Sat., Mar. 1 @ Springfield Falcons - Springfield, MA ATT: 5,197
GOALS: WOR: Terry Virtue, Kevin Colley, Marc Brown SPR: Smith, Banham, Taffe

NOTES: Saturday night in Springfield, the IceCats and the Falcons skated to a 3-3 tie. The tie allowed Worcester to remain three points ahead of the Falcons with both having 18 games remaining. Defenseman Terry Virtue registered one goal, unassisted, and one assist. Virtue picked-up the first assist on Kevin Colley's first marker as an IceCat.

GOALS: WOR: Sergei Varlamov, 2 Chris Corrinet HART: Tripp, Ulmer, Lyashenko

NOTES: The Sunday afternoon at Worcester's Centrum Centre, the IceCats battle back from a two goal third period deficit to tie the Hartford Wolf Pack 3-3. The tie allowed the IceCats to remain just two points behind the Pack in the standings. Forward Chris Corrinet netted both goals for the 'Cats in the third period. He also assisted on the IceCats first goal. Sergei Varlamov registered the 'Cats first goal and had one assist, while Jeff Panzer finished with two assists.
