Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins News Release
Cincinnati, Ohio (Sunday, March 2, 2003) - Toby Petersen scored two goals and Jean-Sebastien Aubin made 30 saves as the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins defeated the Cincinnati Mighty Ducks, 3-1, before a crowd of 3,714 at Cincinnati Gardens. The Penguins, who took three of six points on their three-game road trip in Ohio, got a goal and an assist from Tom Kostopoulos and Milan Kraft added two assists as the Penguins improved their season record to 28-26-5-5 (66 points).
The win was the Penguins' first-ever at Cincinnati Gardens and ended their six-game losing streak losing against the Mighty Ducks in the Queen City.
Aubin was the difference in the first period as he made several key saves to keep the Penguins in the game. He stopped 11 of 12 shots in the first period, including several point-blank scoring chances.
The Penguins, who were shorthanded for most of the opening period, killed off three of Cincinnati's four power play chances, including a 5-on-3 power play for 1:13 early in the game.
The Mighty Ducks finally scored on their fourth power play chance of the game as Travis Brigley beat Aubin with a one-timer from between the circles at 11:35 to give the Ducks' a 1-0 lead.
After not scoring a goal in over four periods, the Penguins scored three unanswered goals in a little over five minutes to take a commanding 3-1 lead in the second period.
It all started midway through the second period on Petersen's power play goal. Just 40 seconds after Mike Commodore was sent off for roughing, the Penguins tied the game at 1-1 as Petersen put back his own rebound top shelf for his 21st goal of the season at 10:10 of the period.
The Penguins took their first lead of the game a few minutes later as Petersen scored his second goal of the game and 22nd of the season at 13:01. Matt Hussey broke in and tried to beat goaltender J-F Damphousse with a back-hander, but Damphousse blocked the shot with his right pad. Petersen, who was trailing on the play, came skating down in the slot and knocked home the rebound into an empty net for the goal.
Tom Kostopoulos increased the lead to 3-1 at 15:20 as he scored his 19th goal of the season. Kostopoulos took a pass from Kraft down low and skated through the crease and beat Damphousse low to the glove side for the goal.
The Penguins are off until Saturday, when they host the Hershey Bears at 7:05 p.m. at the First Union Arena at Casey Plaza.
