Darby named Player of the Week
March 3, 2003 - American Hockey League (AHL) News Release
SPRINGFIELD, MA ... The American Hockey League announced today that Albany River Rats center Craig Darby has been named the Sher-Wood AHL Player of the Week for the period ending March 2, 2003. In four contests, Darby scored two goals and added eight assists for 10 points as Albany continued its push for a Calder Cup Playoff berth.
On Wednesday, Darby scored a goal and set up three others as Albany defeated Syracuse, 4-2, to end a five-game winless streak. After being shut out by Binghamton on Friday, the River Rats stormed back and swept a home-and-home series from division-leading Bridgeport. Darby scored a power play goal in Saturday's 5-3 road win, then assisted on all five goals â a franchise record â as Albany posted another 5-3 victory on Sunday. For the week, Darby contributed a point on 10 of the River Rats' 14 goals.
In recognition of his achievement, Darby will receive a Sher-Wood leather jacket, presented to him during an on-ice ceremony prior to an upcoming game. In addition, Sher-Wood will donate five travel bags to Clifton Park Youth Hockey Association in Darby's name.
A native of nearby Oneida, N.Y., and a graduate of Albany Academy, Darby has 16 goals and 38 assists for 54 points in 60 games with the River Rats this season. The three-time AHL All-Star Game participant led the AHL in assists (55) in 2001-02 and in goals (42) in 1997-98, and won a Calder Cup title with Philadelphia in 1998. A second-round draft pick of Montreal in 1991, Darby has recorded 166 goals and 279 assists for 445 points in 460 career AHL contests since his rookie season of 1993-94. He also has 21 goals and 35 assists in 194 career NHL games, including one assist in three games this season with New Jersey.
Other players nominated for Sher-Wood AHL Player of the Week include Bridgeport right wing Martin Chabada, Chicago center Andreas Karlsson, Cincinnati goaltender Ilja Bryzgalov, Cleveland goaltender Vesa Toskala, Grand Rapids center Stacy Roest, Hartford right wing Nils Ekman, Hershey right wing Brian Willsie, Manchester goaltender Travis Scott, Norfolk center Brett McLean, Rochester center Chris Taylor, San Antonio center Jeff Toms, Syracuse center Donald MacLean, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton center Milan Kraft and Worcester center Chris Corrinet.
