St. John's IceCaps News Release
ST. JOHN'S, NL - The St. John's IceCaps broke a 1-1 tie in the third period and scored four times in the frame to defeat the Hershey Bears 5-1 Friday at Mile One Centre.
Ben Chiarot, Jason Jaffray, John Albert and Austen Brassard found the back of the net in the third as the IceCaps outshot the Bears 15-4. Chiarot finished with a goal and an assist and Eddie Pasquale stopped 24-of-25 shots for his second win of the season.
David Leggio made 35 saves for Hershey while Jeff Taffe scored the Bears' lone goal.
Hershey drew first blood on their fourth power play of the first period. Taffe picked up the puck at the side of the IceCaps net and waited patiently before circling around back of the net and tucking a wraparound past a sprawled Pasquale, giving the Bears a 1-0 lead at 12:31 of the frame.
St. John's tied things up on a power play of their own early in the second period. Josh Lunden took a pass at the side of the Bears net and fired a backhand pass cross-crease to a wide-open JC Lipon, who buried his second of the season to knot things at one.
Midway through the third the IceCaps pulled ahead on Chiarot's second tally of the year. Eric O'Dell kicked the puck back to Chiarot off the faceoff, and the blueliner's shot changed direction in front and beat Leggio to make it 2-1.
Jaffray added an insurance marker minutes later after a forced turnover in the Bears zone. The captain picked off an errant pass attempt and wired a slapshot that eluded Leggio on the glove side for a 3-1 advantage.
Albert iced the game 3:16 later with his first of the season. Chiraot flipped a pass to Klingberg in the neutral zone and fed Albert on the two-on-one rush. The third-year pro made no mistake to make it 4-1 St. John's.
Austen Brassard capped off a terrific third period with his first pro goal. Brassard gathered the puck in his own end and raced down the right side, using Blair Riley as a decoy and snapping a shot off the near post and in, making it 5-1.
The IceCaps and Bears hook up again Saturday night to wrap up their two-game series at Mile One. Catch all the action with broadcaster Brian Rogers at stjohnsicecaps.com and 930AM This Is Newfoundland Labrador. Puck drop is set for 7:30 p.m. with the pregame show getting underway at 7:00.
