Holmstrom Breaks Games Record, Phantoms Doubled-Up at Wilkes

October 18, 2013 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Adirondack Phantoms News Release

The Adirondack Phantoms completed their opening stretch of games in which they played four of their first five on the road and came up short at the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins in a 6-3 final Friday night. Rob Bordson scored his team-leading third goal of the season late in the contest and young prospect Nick Cousins scored the first goal of his professional career. But it was not enough to overcome the Penguins' attack as the hosts in Wilkes-Barre improved to 4-0-0.

Bruno Gervais also scored his second of the season for the Phantoms which are his first two goals in the AHL since February, 2006 when he played for Bridgeport. In-between, Gervais has played over 400 NHL games mostly with the Islanders. Gervais' goal a little over two minutes into the game went top-shelf to the far post from the top of the right circle on a perfect shot.

Ben Holmstrom surpassed Kevin Marshall for the all-time games played record with the Adirondack Phantoms. For Holmstrom it was his 186th game wearing the Phantoms logo.

Brian Gibbons had two terrific assists on goals by Jason Megna and also added a goal for himself to lead the scoring. Veteran Jeff Deslauriers picked up his fourth straight victory for the Penguins.

Cal Heeter started for Adirondack and allowed five goals in the first two periods before Yann Danis came on for relief duty in the third period. Heeter certainly wasn't to blame for the result though. In fact, Heeter made several terrific stops in the first period to keep Adirondack close at a 2-1 deficit despite being outshot in the opening frame.

Cousins first goal of his pro career closed the deficit to 4-2 in the second period and came following a nice dig of the puck in the corner by Brandon Alderson and Petr Straka. The assist from behind the net for Straka was his team-leading fifth point of the season. Cousins had 27 goals and 76 assists last year in Sault Ste. Marie of the OHL as one of the league's top scorers. The third-round pick of the Flyers in 2011 is considered a top prospect in the system. the goal he scored in the away setback is certainly anticipated to be the first of many for him.

Adirondack moves to 1-3-1 with the loss and now will try to use the home-ice advantage to get back on the winning track. The Phantoms play Home Game #2 on Saturday at 7:00 against another unbeaten. The Springfield Falcons carry a 4-0-0 record in the Glens Falls Civic Center for the game. Saturday's contest begins a stretch in which the Phantoms will play five of their next six in Glens Falls.

Call the Phantoms for tickets at 518-480-3355.

Fans are invited to attend the post-game party in the Golia Ice Lounge in Heritage Hall. It's for fans 21 and over and will feature music from a live DJ as well as drink specials.
