Long Beach Ice Dogs News Release

LONG BEACH, Calif. - The Long Beach Ice Dogs (2-4-0) looked more like the team everyone expected them to be this season tonight when they trounced the San Diego Gulls (1-5-0) by a score of 5-0. It was the first shutout for the Ice Dogs this season.

Cory Urquhart got the only goal of the first period at 3:01, with assists to James Sanford and Christian Larrivee. In the second period, Mike Vellinga scored on the power play at 10:01 with assists to newcomer Mac Faulkner and Max Birbraer. Just 1:18 later, Larrivee scored shorthanded from Vellinga and Chris Kenady. Steeve Villeneuve made it 4-0 at 14:34 from Vellinga and Birbraer.

Late in the third period, Birbraer scored with his third point of the night, with help from Urquhart and Larrivee, who also had three points tonight. But it was Jaroslav Halak who was the hero in goal for Long Beach, stopping all 22 shots he faced for his first win of the season. The Canadiens' prospect missed the first week of the season with a groin injury but looked solid in his first start of the season.

The Ice Dogs, who are in the midst of their first winning streak of the season, moved into a tie for second in the Pacific Division with Bakersfield. Long Beach outshot San Diego 39-22 for the game and finished 1-4 on the power play while stopping all five of the Gulls' opportunities, including a five minute major in the third period.

The Ice Dogs play again Friday night when they take on the Idaho Steelheads at 7:30pm. WWE Superstar Rey Mysterio will be in attendance from 6-8pm signing autographs and taking pictures.

Season tickets for the 2005-06 season are still on sale, and can be secured by depositing just $100 per seat. Call (562) ICE-DOGS for visit www.icedogs.com for more information.
