Victoria Salmon Kings News Release
Victoria, BC - The Victoria Salmon Kings handed the 2004-05 Kelly Cup Champion Trenton Titans, their first loss in regulation time on Wednesday. They beat the Titans 2-1 in Victoria's inaugural visit to the home of the ECHL.
The Salmon Kings announced the signing of Forward Mike Henderson earlier in the afternoon and his addition to the Victoria roster proved to be positive. After a goalless first period, Henderson opened the scoring at 4:24 of the second. He picked up a loose puck in the neutral zone and ripped it past Titans rookie Goaltender Martin Houle, to make his impact immediate.
With 20 minutes in penalties between the two teams already in the books, Salmon Kings Defenseman Aaron MacInnis capitalized on the man advantage. MacInnis scored Victoria's eventual game winning goal midway through the second period. Victoria finished the game one for nine on the powerplay while shutting the Titans down on all eight of their opportunities.
Goaltender Rob Muntain was strong between the pipes in his third straight start for the Salmon Kings. He was only beaten once, by Aaron Gill, and made 28 saves including 10 in the third, to backstop the Salmon Kings to their second win of the season. The Salmon Kings record now stands at 2-3, while the Titans move to 2-1-1.
Salmon Kings Forward Lanny Gare was placed on the seven day injured reserve with Forward Jan Sochor, while Forward Steve Roberts was moved to the 30 day injured reserve to continue to repair from an injury he sustained in training camp.
Henderson joins the Salmon Kings after spending the 2004-05 season in Germany with the Heilbronn Falcons. The 5'10" 180lbs. native of Mississauga, ON adds speed and scoring touch to the Salmon Kings roster. He has scored 56 goals and 72 assists in 128 games as a professional in North America, and recorded 29 goals and 21 assists for 50 points in 39 games in his first season over-seas.
Victoria will look to string a couple wins together on Friday when they play against the Dayton Bombers. The North Division leading Toledo Storm are awaiting the arrival of the Salmon Kings for their Saturday night tilt, and Victoria will end their eight game road start in Wheeling, WV against the Nailers, on Sunday.
Victoria's first game in the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre is against the Stockton Thunder on Thursday November 10th. Single game tickets are now on sale at Select Your Tickets as well as specially designed group packages that suit all schedules and budgets.
