San Diego Gulls News Release

LONG BEACH, Calif. - The Long Beach Ice Dogs scored three times in a 4:33 span in the second period, en route to a 5-0 whitewashing of the San Diego Gulls Wednesday night at the Long Beach Arena. San Diego, which finishes its road trip Friday in Bakersfield, has now dropped three straight.

The Gulls (1-5-0) have been outscored 12-1 in the last two games and 23-10 in their six games so far this season. The Ice Dogs (2-4-0) pick up their second straight win after beginning the campaign with four straight losses.

Former Gull Max Birbraer, who played with San Diego last season, and Mike Vellinga each picked up a goal and two assists. Rookie netminder Jaroslav, making his first professional start, stopped all 22 shots for his first career shutout.

Long Beach grabbed an early 1-0 lead 3:01 into the first period, thanks to Cory Urquhart. After hopping on a loose puck at center ice, Urquhart skated in all alone, made a move to his forehand and beat netminder Tyler Weiman top-shelf. San Diego has now allowed the first goal in five of six games so far this season.

The Gulls had a golden opportunity to tie the game late in the first when they were awarded a two-man advantage for 1:15. Halak and his defensive corps, however, kept the Blue and Orange off the scoreboard.

Halak remained solid, but the big story was the Ice Dogs' dominance in the second period. Long Beach out-shot San Diego 25-5 in the middle frame and scored three times in a 4:33 span to grab a commanding 4-0 lead.

Vellinga got the second-period scoring started at the 10:01 mark, beating a screened Weiman with a slapper from the blue line. Christian Larrivee then netted a short-hander 1:18 later, wristing one home from the right wing circle.

Villeneuve gave the Ice Dogs a comfortable four-goal cushion at 14:34 with a power-play marker. Birbraer, who assisted on Vellinga's tally, earned his second assist on the play. He notched his third point of the game when he lit the lamp at the 17:59 mark of the third, making it a 5-0 game.
