Long Beach Ice Dogs News Release

LAKEWOOD, Calif. – Beginning a season loaded with optimism, the Long Beach Ice Dogs gave their fans a taste of what they hope is to come, defeating rival San Diego, 3-1, in front of a packed house at Glacial Gardens in Lakewood.

San Diego struck first, with a power play goal by Colin Embly at 7:46 of the first period. The Gulls maintained the 1-0 lead until Ice Dogs rookie, Marco Rosa, put in a one-timer from fellow rookie forward, Robin Leblanc, to tie the score a 1-1. The score would remain tied until 2:33 of the third period when Christian Larrivee gave the Ice Dogs a 2-1 lead. Less than three minutes later, Evan Cheverie scored unassisted to make it 3-1 Long Beach as it remained.

With just one player from last years' team on the roster, defenseman Trevor Read, the new look Ice Dogs looked like a team ready to return to the glory days of old. Goaltender Olivier Michaud, assigned by the Hamilton Bulldogs last week, made 28 saves on 29 shots, outplaying Gulls goalie, Mathieu Chouinard who stopped 11 of 14 shots.

These two teams will meet again on Sunday in San Diego in the final preseason game before opening the regular season against each other on Friday, October 22nd in Long Beach.
