Gulls Fall To Ice Dogs In Preseason Opener, 3-1

LAKEWOOD, Calif. – After trailing 1-0 early in the first period, the Long Beach Ice Dogs came back with three unanswered goals to defeat the San Diego Gulls 3-1 Friday night in the first of two head-to-head preseason games.

San Diego struck first, with a power-play-goal from newcomer Colin Embley at 7:46 of the first period. The Gulls maintained the 1-0 lead until Ice Dogs rookie, Marco Rosa, put in a one-timer from fellow rookie forward, Robin Leblanc, to tie the score a 1-1.

The score would remain tied until 2:33 of the third period when Long Beach's Christian Larrivee gave the Ice Dogs a 2-1 lead. Less than three minutes later, Evan Cheverie scored unassisted to make it 3-1.

Ice Dogs goaltender Olivier Michaud, assigned by the American Hockey League's Hamilton Bulldogs last week, stopped 28 of 29 shots. Gulls netminder Mathieu Chouinard turned aside 11 of Long Beach's 14 shots.

The two teams will square off again in the preseason finale Sunday at the San Diego Ice Arena in Mira Mesa. The game will start at 5 p.m. and "Skate with the Gulls" will be held immediately afterward. Tickets are $7 for general admission and $5 for Gulls season ticket holders. Skate rentals are already included in the price.
