CHARLOTTE, NC – Down 1-0 at the start of the third period, the Charlotte Checkers notched three consecutive goals on their way to a 4-3 shootout victory Friday night at the Augusta Ice Sports Center.

The Lynx would jump on the board at 7:30 of the first period when rookie Matt Schmidt scored his first goal of the night from John Cronin and Louis Goulet, putting Augusta ahead 1-0. No further scoring would occur until the third period when Charlotte notched three consecutive goals, the first at 6:35 off the stick of Brett Peterson to tie the game at 1-1. Matt Chandler and Mike Harder followed with goals of their own to give the Checkers a 3-1 advantage at the 12:53 mark of the third period. With time running out, Schmidt scored his second goal of the evening at 17:12 from Cronin and Treavor Peterson, pulling Augusta to within one. Augusta tied the game just over a minute later with a goal by Sean Connolly from Goulet sending the game into overtime.

In the extra session, neither team was able to score despite having quality chances with the puck. Deadlocked at 3-3, the game would come down to a shootout. Neither team was able to mark until the seventh round when Cody Loughlean scored to give the Checkers the win. Kelly Guard earned the win for Charlotte, playing 40:14 including the OT and going seven for seven in the shootout, finishing with 17 saves. Jason Saal earned the shootout point for Augusta, stopping 19 shots in all and six of seven in the shootout.

Charlotte will now head home to battle the Lynx once again at 7 p.m. at Cricket Arena today. Tickets are $5 available at the door and free to season ticket holders. Training camp continues next week for the Checkers as they prepare for the season opener on the road against the Greenville Grrrowl on Friday, October 22nd at 7:30. The Checkers will face off against the Columbia Inferno for Opening Night in Charlotte on Saturday, October 30th.
