Long Beach Ice Dogs News Release
LONG BEACH, Calif. - The Ice Dogs face the Fresno Falcons on Sunday at 5pm at the Long Beach Arena after a tough loss on Saturday night in Stockton.
The Ice Dogs struck first on the power play with Hobey Baker Award Finalist and Boston Bruins free agent T.J. Trevelyan scoring his first professional goal on a rebound just 2:36 into the first period. On the ensuing face-off Ice Dog enforcer Eric Neilson and Stockton Thunder Adam Huxley dropped the gloves and went toe-to-toe for 80 seconds in an exciting battle with both players landing punches. Former Ice Dog Nathan Martz tied the game at 1-1 with a power play goal at 14:48 as the two teams went into the first intermission knotted at one.
Alex Kim scored his second goal of the year to give the Dogs a 2-1 lead on the power play, but the Thunder came right back again. Eric Main, playing in his first professional game out of Colgate University, scored his first professional goal to knot things up at 2-2. The second period did not end without incident, as David Walker pounded away on Tim O'Connell in the left wing corner in the Ice Dogs zone as O'Connell was held down by a linesman.
After a lucky bounce on a Mark Hurtubise clear in the Thunder zone, second year player Ash Goldie got the puck in front off the end boards and had an empty net chance as Edmonton Oilers' first round pick and Stockton goalie Devan Dubnyk was out of the net. Stockton was awarded a 4-3 power play and pulled Dubnyk for the extra skater late in the third and Nathan Martz tipped home a shot from the point with just 34 seconds left in regulation to tie the game at 3-3.
After a scoreless overtime, both teams scored three times in the shoot out, which brought the shoot out to sudden death. After several great saves by Ice Dog net minder Mike Brown and Thunder goaltender Devan Dubnyk, it was Brendan Hodge in the 13th round that sealed the victory as he scored on Brown on a backhander.
Notes: The Ice Dogs went 2-13 on the PP, the Thunder 2-12. Both coaches were upset with the officials as Stockton Coach Chris Cichocki was screaming at the end of the second period after the scrum, and Head Coach Rick Adduono was issued an unsportsmanlike penalty for barking at the officials after Stockton tied the game at 3-3. It was Eric Neilson's first major penalty of the season in his second game with the Dogs, after leading Bakersfield with major penalties last season. Mike Brown stopped 9 of 13 shooters in the shootout.
The family 4-pak will be available for Sunday's game vs. the Fresno Falcons at 5pm which includes; 4 tickets, 4 hotdogs, and 4 sodas for just $36. The Ice Dogs will be holding a costume contest, Haunted House, and other Halloween activities on Sunday. Season tickets and group sales for the 2006-07 season are still on sale now.
